What happens if Iran hits Apple, Google, Meta and other tech companies? From outages to cyberattacks, here’s what to expect

HIGHLIGHTS

Iran’s warning to target major tech firms could trigger global disruptions across cloud services, cybersecurity, and financial systems.

Potential attacks on companies like Apple, Google, and Meta could disrupt critical digital infrastructure worldwide.

Experts warn of a surge in cyberattacks, including ransomware and destructive malware targeting enterprises and users.

Tensions seem to be rising in the Middle East and we might enter into a more unpredictable phase as Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has warned that it can take potential action against the major US tech firms operating in the region on Wednesday 8:00 PM local time. The statement was shared through state-aligned channels and looks like a strategic shift in focus from military targets to private sector companies, specifically those involved in AI, cloud computing and digital infrastructure.

List of companies at risk

Apple Inc, Google (Alphabet Inc.), Microsoft Corporation, Meta Platforms, Amazon (specifically AWS), Intel Corporation, IBM, Oracle Corporation, Nvidia, Dell Technologies, HP Inc., Cisco Systems, Palantir Technologies, Boeing, Tesla Inc., General Electric (GE), JPMorgan Chase, G42, and Spire Solutions.

Tech firms threatened

As per the warning, companies such as Apple, Google and Meta along with others in semiconductor cloud and aerospace sectors, could be considered legitimate targets. The IRGC has alleged that these firms play a big role in enabling advanced warfare technologies, including AI driven targeting systems.

The advisory reportedly urged employees working at these companies’ regional offices to evacuate, citing potential risks to infrastructure and personnel. While no specific locations were confirmed, key tech hubs in the Gulf region including the UAE, Qatar and Bahrain are seen as vulnerable due to the presence of major data centers and corporate offices.

What could happen next?

If Iran attacks the big tech companies, the impact can be global and can actually create multi layers of disruptions.

  1. Infrastructure risks: Data centres and regional headquarters could face direct attacks, potentially affecting cloud services relied upon by businesses worldwide.
  2. Increase in cyber warfare: It may increase the number of sophisticated cyberattacks, including ransomware and destructive malware, which is likely, targeting both companies and their users.
  3. Frequent and service outage: The attacks can disrupt the cloud platforms which means banking systems, payment networks and essential digital services including social media platforms like Instagram and Facebook may face problems globally.
  4. It may also impact the global markets. There can be slow down in investments in AI and cloud infrastructure, increased operational and insurance risks for multinational companies and volatility in global tech stocks and supply chains.
