OpenAI working on Spud, a new flagship AI model that may mark big step toward AGI

HIGHLIGHTS

OpenAI is developing its next flagship AI model “Spud,” which could mark a major leap toward Artificial General Intelligence.

Greg Brockman says Spud is built on two years of research and offers a “big model feel” with better context understanding.

The model is expected to improve reasoning and reduce the need for repeated prompts by better grasping user intent.

OpenAI, which recently raised $122 billion, is working on a new flagship model internally codenamed Spud. As competition heats up in enterprise AI, OpenAI President Greg Brockman recently described Spud as the result of two years of research and suggested it surpasses existing systems. He added that Spud has a “big model feel,” hinting at notable improvements in contextual understanding and prompt responsiveness.

Early signals suggest Spud offers stronger reasoning and more intuitive outputs than current models. A key improvement is its ability to quickly grasp user intent, minimizing the need for repeated clarifications. This could make interactions smoother and allow users to complete complex tasks with minimal input.

OpenAI has reportedly paused or scaled back certain experimental initiatives to prioritise progress toward Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), which refers to AI systems capable of human-like reasoning across domains. CEO Sam Altman has also consistently positioned AGI as the company’s ultimate goal, and Spud is seen as a key step in that direction.

According to reports, Spud may sit at the top of OpenAI’s expanding model lineup. It may combine the strengths of general-purpose AI with advanced reasoning capabilities. If realised, this combination will make it more versatile across a wide range of use cases, including coding, research, and enterprise automation.

Spud is believed to be in advanced stages of development, with some reports suggesting that training has already been completed. While there is no official launch timeline yet, expectations are building that the model could be unveiled later this year.
