OpenAI working on group chat and DM features for ChatGPT: Here’s what we know

The new “Start a group chat” button lets users create invite links so others can join and view past messages.

Custom instructions and memory in group chats will stay separate from personal ChatGPT settings for privacy.

The feature may include message reactions, file uploads, typing indicators, and web search for real-time collaboration.

After introducing the upgraded Sora 2 video generation model and TikTok style AI video app last month, OpenAI now seems to be working on ChatGPT to make it a full-fledged communication platform. The company is testing group chat and direct messaging (DM) capabilities, aiming to make it an everything app.

Taking to X, Tibor Blaho, Lead Engineer at AIPRM, shared the first preview of ChatGPT’s upcoming group chat interface. As per Blaho, a new “Start a group chat” button has been added to the top navigation bar on ChatGPT’s web app. This feature allows users to generate an invite link and share it with others, who can then join the conversation and even view previous messages in the thread.

Blaho further stated that group chat settings and custom instructions will remain separate from individual ChatGPT preferences. Users will be able to control how the chatbot responds, either automatically or only when tagged, while ensuring that their personal ChatGPT memory remains isolated from group interactions.

The early preview also teases various interactive features for group chats, including message reactions, typing indicators, reply threads, file uploads, image creation, and integrated online search capabilities. These additions indicate that ChatGPT may eventually offer collaborative, real-time conversations, expanding beyond its usual one-on-one chat style.

The company previously introduced the shared projects feature which aims to enhance teamwork and contextual continuity. Shared projects let users upload files, maintain ongoing discussions, and collaborate in modes similar to “chat” or “edit,” much like a Google Docs-style workspace.

It must be noted that OpenAI has not confirmed the details about the feature at the moment. However, it is expected to roll out in the coming weeks.
