New rules from July 1: Passport application price hike, mAadhaar app retiring and more

HIGHLIGHTS

Several new government and financial rules take effect from July 1.

Aadhaar services move to a new app with improved features and security.

Free Aadhaar email updates and the July 31 ITR filing deadline are key changes to note.

The calendar month has been updated, and so have the rules in the country. Whether it be government services, passport, or financial compliance, many of the updated rules are now officially coming into force starting July 1. Whether you are planning a trip abroad, trying to manage your digital identity or organising your annual tax paperwork, staying informed of these updated rules can help you avoid any last-minute inconvenience. If you’re not aware of these changes, then you need not to worry, as the article below has a clear breakdown of the rules that are coming into effect starting July 1.

Revised passport fees

The government has officially revised the service charges for passport applications. The updated fees are applicable for both normal and Tatkaal categories, including the fresh and reissued passports.

The fee for a standard 36-page passport has been increased to Rs 2,500, which was previously just Rs 1,500, while the Tatkaal service for the same document now costs Rs 5,000, while earlier it was Rs 3,500.

That’s not all, as the hikes also apply to 60-page booklets and replacement services for damaged or lost passports. The standard 60-page passport now costs Rs 3,500, which is a Rs 1,500 hike from its old price of Rs 2,000. Whereas the Tatkal for the 60-page passport now costs Rs 6,000, which is a Rs 2,000 hike from its old price of Rs 4,000.

Transition to the new Aadhaar app

The mAadhaar mobile app retired on June 30. The government has replaced it with the new and upgraded version of the Aadhaar app, which is much more secure. The new app was launched earlier this year and is available for download via Play Store and App Store.

If you have not downloaded the new Aadhaar app, then you must do so right away, as it allows you to maintain uninterrupted access to your digital identity services and easily make changes to your Aadhaar card digitally. The new Aadhaar app also provides better facilities such as face authentication, easier biometric locking, and a more streamlined interface for accessing services.

Free email updates on new Aadhaar app

If you want to update the email address on your new Aadhaar app, then you can do it for free. The government has launched a limited-time offer that starts from July 1, 2026, and ends on December 1, 2026. During this period the users can update their email address in your Aadhaar records using the app completely for free. Generally you need to pay a fee of Rs 75 to update anything in the Aadhaar records, but the government has completely waived off the fee for the next 6 months.

Tax filing reminder

If you have not yet filed your Income Tax Return (ITR), please treat this as an urgent priority. The deadline for filing ITR-1 and ITR-2 for the financial year 2025-26 is July 31, 2026. Filing your returns before this date is crucial to avoid late penalties and to ensure you remain compliant with tax regulations.
