Face authentication and QR scans enable instant, paperless Aadhaar verification.

Users have full control over the personal data they share through the app.

The app is currently in beta and will be rolled out widely after feedback collection.

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has unveiled a new mobile application for Aadhar that will integrate facial recognition and AI-powered authentication. The application has been developed with the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) and aims to make Aadhaar verification as seamless and secure as using UPI for payments.

The new Aadhaar app eliminates the need to carry physical copies of your Aadhaar card for verification at hotels, shops, airports, and other locations. Citizens will be able to verify their identities using QR scans and real-time face authentication, all from their mobile phones.

Taking to X, Ashwinin Vaishnaw stated that it gives users complete control over the information they choose to share. “No more distributing Aadhaar photocopies. “With just a tap, you can share only the necessary data while maintaining complete privacy,” he wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

The application makes use of Aadhaar Face Authentication, a system that has already processed over 150 million transactions per month across a variety of sectors. The newly introduced application also includes QR-based verification, which is similar to the simplified UPI payments with QR codes.

According to the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, the application will allow Aadhaar holders to verify their identity and share information only when necessary digitally. It is built with numerous safeguards to prevent data misuse, unauthorized access, and identity theft.

The application is currently in beta testing and is available to a select group of users, including those who attended the Aadhaar Samvaad event. Before the application is released to the public, the authorities will solicit feedback in order to improve it further.

Once fully operational, this Aadhaar app is expected to simplify access to services while protecting user privacy, representing another step forward in India’s digital governance efforts.
