Users can select favourite news outlets to appear more often in “Top Stories” and a new “From your sources” section.
Feature is now available in India and the US, with wider availability expected in the coming days.
Select outlets via a “Top Stories” overlay, then reload results for personalised news prioritisation.
Google has rolled out a new feature called Preferred Sources, enabling users to customise and prioritise content from their favourite websites in search results. The search engine giant, in its official blog post, announced that the feature lets users add preferred news outlets and blogs, which will then appear in the user’s Google Search’s “Top Stories” section.
With Preferred Sources, Google will also group content from those outlets into a new “From your sources” section right within search results. Google says the feature aims to provide users with a more personalised and relevant news experience, ensuring trusted outlets are at the front and centre when searching for timely topics.
The feature, tested since June, is now available to users in India and the United States. Google is rolling out the update gradually; it may take a few days before it appears for all accounts.
How to set preferred sources in Google search?
Search for a news-related topic in Google.
In the “Top Stories” section, click the icon located to the right of the headline bar.
An overlay will open, allowing you to search for and select your desired publications or news outlets.
After selecting, click the “Reload results” button at the bottom of the overlay.
Once done, stories from your chosen outlets will appear more often in “Top Stories” and in the dedicated “From your sources” section. Notably, users will still receive articles from other publishers, and selections can be changed or removed at any time.
Google says the move aims to make Search more useful and trustworthy by giving people control over the sources they see most often. The company said that the Preferred Sources feature will be useful for those who rely on specific outlets to consume information, particularly during breaking news events.
