FASTag new rules: What is KYV process, all documents required, how to verify your car and other FAQs answered

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has eased the Know Your Vehicle (KYV) process for FASTag users, bringing relief to vehicle owners who faced technical glitches and sudden deactivations under the earlier system. The new guidelines, issued by the Indian Highways Management Company Limited (IHMCL), ensure that FASTag services will no longer be abruptly suspended for users who haven’t completed KYV. Banks will now have to send reminders and assist customers through the process instead of freezing their tags.

What is the KYV process?

The Know Your Vehicle (KYV) process was introduced in 2023 to prevent misuse of FASTags, particularly cases where commercial vehicles used private car tags to pay lower tolls. Under KYV, users must upload their vehicle Registration Certificate (RC) and a photo showing the number plate and FASTag on the windshield. The process must be completed once every three years to ensure the tag is correctly linked to the vehicle.

What has changed in the new KYV rules?

The latest revision simplifies documentation. Users of cars, jeeps, and vans no longer need to upload side photos of their vehicles; only a front-facing photo showing the number plate and FASTag is required.

The system will also automatically fetch vehicle details from the government’s VAHAN database when users enter their vehicle number, chassis number, or registered mobile number. If multiple vehicles are linked to a single mobile number, users can select the correct one for verification.

Additionally, FASTags issued before the KYV policy will remain active by default unless there are complaints of misuse or discrepancies.

Documents required for KYV Update

Make sure you have the following ready before starting the process:

1. Front view photo of your vehicle, showing the number plate, FASTag sticker on the windshield, and vehicle edges clearly visible.
2. Photo of the FASTag taken from inside the vehicle, ensuring the tag’s serial number is readable.
3. Front and back images of the vehicle’s Registration Certificate (RC).

How to Update KYV: Step-by-step guide

The KYV update can be done through your issuing bank’s website or mobile app. Major FASTag providers include Airtel Payments Bank, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, SBI, IDFC FIRST Bank, and Park+. Here’s how you can do it. 

1. Log in to your FASTag account via the app or website of your issuing bank.
2. Go to FASTag Services and select the KYV section, usually found under Account Settings or Profile.
3. Review your vehicle details—such as license plate number, chassis/VIN, and engine number—and correct any errors.
4. Upload the required images and documents listed above.
5. Click Submit to complete the process. A confirmation message will appear on the screen once your documents are uploaded.

Will my FASTag get deactivated?

No. Under the new rules, FASTag accounts will not be suspended automatically for incomplete KYV. Issuing banks must notify users via SMS reminders and offer sufficient time to complete the process before taking any action.

How to resolve KYV-related issues

If users encounter problems while uploading documents or accessing the portal, the issuing bank is responsible for assisting them. For complaints or queries, FASTag users can call the National Highway helpline at 1033 for KYV-related issues.
