4Chan taken down via DDoS

Updated on 28-Dec-2010

You can’t hack a hacker–or can you? According to 4Chan’s status page, the popular message board behind LOLcasts, Rick Rolling, and some far more questionable activities has been temporarily knocked out of commission via a distributed denial of service attack.

[RELATED_ARTICLE]”Site is down due to DDoS,” the site wrote in the early hours of the morning. “We now join the ranks of MasterCard, Visa, PayPal, et al.–an exclusive club!” The comment refers to the recent “Operation: Payback” DDoS attacks that took down three major financial companies after they froze accounts linked to WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.

4Chan was one of the major rallying points for Operation: Payback’s activities. No definitive word on who is behind these new attacks, but this almost certainly means war.
