China’s Game Grandpa goes viral

Now as gamers, we’ve all been in situations where a game felt too hard to continue and we had to rely on a YouTube creator to beat a particular section. But Yang Binglin, known online as Game Grandpa, prefers the old-school way. The 91-year-old gamer is in the limelight for beating Resident Evil Requiem without watching any walkthroughs or tutorial videos. Instead, he relied on a pen and paper, and kept a track of solutions, puzzles, maps, and more.

This reminds us of the times when we used to note down cheat codes and other details about games in notebooks a couple of years back. Those were the days, right?

But for Yang, the approach isn’t random. He is a retired engineer who worked in oil and gas research for decades before retiring in 1996. So for him, gaming is less about speed and more about understanding systems, observing patterns, and solving problems step by step. And that discipline is exactly what his playstyle reflects.

Recognised by Guinness World Records

The clip has been posted on X and is gaining a lot of attention. Gamers around the world are rooting for Yang. One user commented, “91 years old, beating horror games, taking notes like a pro… meanwhile I can’t even find the save button. Absolute legend.” Another user said, “Gonna be me at 91 when kids need AI to beat games lol.”

This is not the first time that China’s Game Grandpa has made headlines. In 2024, he was recognised by Guinness World Records as the world’s oldest male gaming streamer. And since then, his popularity has only grown.
