A few days ago, reports surfaced about a terminally ill gamer getting early access to GTA 6. The story began with a Reddit post shared by a family member, which quickly went viral. Rockstar Games reportedly stepped in to help fulfil the fan’s final wish. The incident reminded us all how the gaming community can come together during difficult moments. And now, another similar incident is making headlines. A terminally ill gamer, whose last wish is to play Doom, was recently surprised with a PlayStation 5 while receiving care in hospital. The gesture did not come from a marketing campaign or a big event. It came from hospital staff who simply wanted to make someone happy during an incredibly difficult time.

The story surfaced on Reddit’s Doom community, where a user known as u/Wanderingreader123 shared a deeply personal update. The gamer revealed that he has been battling cancer since 2022 and had recently been told that his time was limited. While undergoing treatment at a hospital in Toronto, Canada, he made a simple request. He wanted to play Doom one last time.
The hospital staff stepped in to make that wish come true. They arranged a PlayStation 5 along with a copy of Doom: The Dark Ages so he could play comfortably during his stay. The console was delivered directly to his hospital room, allowing him to focus on something familiar and comforting instead of medical routines.
In his Reddit post, he wrote, “I am grateful that, despite the grim outlook that I am facing, the hospital was able to secure not only a PS5, but a copy of the game. I am currently blasting my way through hordes of demons in Chapter 4 and I have nothing but childish glee as I return to my roots as a badass Demon Slayer. I may not live to see the upcoming DLC, but I am nonetheless happy to finally play the game in my own hands.”
In the post, the Doom fan also thanked the developers for making the game. He wrote, “To the developers of ID Software, thank you for bringing such a beautiful piece of art that not only brought the FPS genre to its roots, but also revitalize and reinvented the wheel that no other game could. Not only that, but thank you for crafting such an awesome series for a fan like me.”
The post quickly gained attention, reaching developers behind the Doom series. Hugo Martin, the game director for Doom, responded through his verified Reddit account. He thanked the player for supporting the series over the years and said the entire studio saluted him. Martin also shared how moments like these stay with developers and serve as reminders of why they make games in the first place.
