Sony PlayStation Portal may launch soon with these upgrades: All details

Updated on 12-Jan-2026

PlayStation Portal, Sony’s cloud-based handheld device, was released a few years back as a companion for the PlayStation 5 (PS5). Unlike traditional handheld devices like the Steam Deck or the Nintendo Switch, it does not play games locally. Instead, it uses the PS5 to stream games onto the companion device. Ever since its release, the PlayStation Portal has sold well in the market, as it has given users a new way to play their PS5 games. Looks like Sony is finally looking to refresh the device, as new reports suggest that the PlayStation Portal could launch with a range of new upgrades.

To recall, the current generation PlayStation Portal was launched in India on 3 August 2024, and was priced at Rs 18,990.

PlayStation Portal refresh, OLED 120hz screen and more

According to an X user, Sony is looking to make some changes to the PlayStation Portal. As per the rumour, the PlayStation Portal refresh could feature a new OLED screen, which will be a big upgrade from the LCD panel on the current model. Not only that, but the X user also suggests that the refresh could reportedly come with a 120Hz refresh rate. This could be a big upgrade, as a ton of new games run at 120 fps on the PS5.

As of now, we have no other information about the PlayStation Portal upgrade, regarding the pricing and release date. Last year, while Sony did refresh the PlayStation Portal, it did not make any hardware changes. The refresh only included a new Black colourway option as part of its Midnight Black Collection, which was not a big change. But if the rumour turns out to be true, then the new refresh could be a good deal for new buyers, and a meaningful upgrade for current model owners.

The current PlayStation Portal model features an 8-inch 1080p 60 Hz LCD touchscreen. The handheld uses Wi-Fi connectivity to stream games. Users can stream games using their PS5, while PlayStation Plus users can also use the cloud service to stream games without a local console. The controller is based on the Dualsense 5, and it comes integrated with haptic feedback and adaptive triggers. Under the hood, the device is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 680 SoC, and it includes a 4,370mAh battery, which claims to give around 5-8 hours of gameplay.
