Sony’s PlayStation 5 is one of the most-popular consoles in the Indian market. Every now and then, the console keeps making headlines be it for a price drop or something new being announced. Perhaps the scale of PS5’s popularity can be felt in how there are already rumours of what the PS6 has in store for us. However, Sony’s recent announcement might be worrisome for those who have been thinking of buying a new PS5, but have been waiting for some special sale or price drop.
The tech giant recently announced a global price hike for the PS5. The news came in the form of a blog post by Sony, which blames the “economic landscape” for this decision. The price hike will come into effect from April 2 this year, which is less than a week away. Read on to know all that has been announced, and if PS5 prices will rise in India as well.

Isabelle Tomatis, Sony’s Vice President, Global Marketing, said in the blog post that due to “continued pressures in the global economic landscape”, the company has decided to increase PS5, PS5 Pro, and PlayStation Portal remote player prices globally.
Tomatis then added that they are aware of how change in prices impacts their community but it was a necessary step to “ensure they can continue delivering innovative, high-quality gaming experiences to players worldwide.”
The new prices, as mentioned already, will come into effect from April 2.
Now, coming to the new prices. In the blog post, prices of four markets including US, Japan, UK and Europe, have been mentioned. Talking about the US specifically, the PlayStation 5 is getting a noticeable price bump across variants. Both the Disc and Digital editions are going up by $100 (around ₹9,486). The biggest jump in prices is seen in the PlayStation 5 Pro, which sees a $150 (approximately ₹14,229) increase. Meanwhile, the PlayStation Portal remote player’s cost has seen a $199.99 (₹18,971) jump.
Here are the new prices, as mentioned in Sony’s blog:
1) USA
PS5: $649.99 (Around Rs 61,660)
PS5 Digital Edition: $599.99 (Around Rs 56,917)
PS5 Pro: $899.99 (Around Rs 85,376)
2) UK
PS5: £569.99
PS5 Digital Edition: £519.99
PS5 Pro: £789.99
3) Europe
PS5: €649.99
PS5 Digital Edition: €599.99
PS5 Pro: €899.99
4) Japan
PS5: ¥97,980
PS5 Digital Edition: ¥89,980
PS5 Pro: ¥137,980
India was not mentioned in the list but that doesn’t mean that the price hike won’t affect the country. At the end of the blog post, the brand mentioned that players should check with their local retailers or direct.playstation.com where the consoles are available for details on price hike in other territories. Now this simply means that in order to check the new prices in India, you must visit a local retailer or keep a tab on online outlets where the PS5 is sold.
As of now, the PS5 Digital costs Rs 49,990 while the Disk edition costs Rs 54,990. The PS5 Pro hasn’t been launched in India yet. That said, rumours of the console’s launch were doing rounds on the internet recently but nothing is confirmed.
Now if we go by the price hike seen in the US, after April 2, the PS5 new price in India could be around Rs 65,000 for the disk edition, and Rs 60,000 for the digital edition. But this is pure speculation at this point, and Sony India is yet to give a new price for the Indian market.
Meanwhile, the PS5 is being sold on Flipkart, Blinkit, Amazon, Vijay Sales, Reliance Digital, Croma and Sony Center’s website. Some Sony outlets also have stocks.
It is to be noted that since the price hike has been announced, units might soon be out of stock. So if you are thinking of buying a PS5, now is probably the best time.
