Since last year, an upcoming indie title, ‘Just A Shadow Game’ – yes, that’s the actual name of the game – has been highly anticipated by many who follow the indie game scene. It’s a dark fantasy roguelike ritual-builder that got a demo a few months back, and since then, many have been eager to see the full version of the game. While the developers haven’t announced a final release date yet, they have made quite an interesting announcement recently. They have announced a new playtest, which starts today and will be available for a limited time till May 25. So without wasting much time, let’s take a look at some of the new features that the playtest will offer, along with how you can access the playtest for yourself.

What is the ‘Just A Shadow Game’ about?

Before checking out the features of the playtest, let me first enlighten you with the game itself. Well, as mentioned previously, ‘Just A Shadow Game’ is a dark fantasy deck-building roguelike with a slight twist. Now I know that sounds like a lot, but in reality it’s a lot of fun.

The game blends strategic ritual building, spellcasting and monster summoning with a meta-narrative about the horrors of game development. The concept already sounds very cool, and the game manages to implement it very nicely – well, it did at least in the demo I checked out a while back.

With the playtest, the developers suggest that they’re trying to give players early access to the game’s core systems, the narrative progression, and a series of new gameplay features, along with a new set of cards to experiment with. Let’s take a look at what the playtest adds now.

New additions to the playtest

The developers have added a new protagonist’s room and a computer interface. Think of it as a central hub where players can navigate chapters, select clans, view unlocked cards, and get lore about the game’s narrative. They’ve also integrated a new meta progression system, where players can earn points after each run.

They’re adding in multiple clans, new spell cards and new buildings. Last but not least, the developers have also made changes to the overall roguelite systems. This brings changes to the relic system and the relic shop room, overall adding replayability and giving players more build variety.

How to access the playtest?

While the demo is available to download from the game’s Steam page, it’s different from the playtest currently running for a limited time. As mentioned previously, the latest playtest adds many new features, which make the experience quite different from the demo. You’d need to join the official Discord server of the game, wherein you’d find all the steps to access the playtest.
