After years of rumours, leaks and endless fan speculation, Rockstar Games last month confirmed what we all were waiting for: Grand Theft Auto 6 (GTA 6) is officially launching on May 26, 2026. The announcement came with a surprise trailer drop on YouTube, without any warning or buildup and it instantly went viral. GTA 6 has some big shoes to fill. Its predecessor, GTA 5, broke sales records and continues to be one of the most-played games. With such a high bar, Rockstar is clearly aiming to take things even further with this new title in the franchise.

Rockstar Games typically releases new titles every few years. For instance, GTA San Andreas hit the shelves in 2004, followed by Liberty City Stories just a year later. However, the gap between San Andreas and GTA IV stretched to four years. Now, fans are facing the longest wait yet: a gap of 13 years between the release of GTA V (released in 2013) and the upcoming GTA 6. This long development time suggests Rockstar is putting in serious efforts to make it their best game.
While Rockstar hasn’t officially revealed the cost, reports suggest GTA 6 could be the most expensive video game. With how realistic and detailed the trailer looks, it wouldn’t be surprising if the reports turned out to be true.

For the first time in GTA history, the game will feature a female main character named Lucia. She’s shown in the trailer alongside a male partner. This fresh character combo is expected to bring a new kind of storytelling to the series.
Fans of the series will be thrilled to know that GTA 6 will take place in Vice City, the iconic fictional city inspired by Miami. The trailer reveals that players will explore a region called Leonida, which appears to be a more modern and expanded version of the classic setting.
Back in September 2022, Rockstar suffered a major security breach when a hacker leaked nearly 100 early gameplay clips from GTA 6 online. To make matters worse, just before the official reveal, the game’s first trailer was leaked early, forcing Rockstar to release it ahead of schedule.
