The movie is based on the real life of Shah Bano Begum, played by Yami Gautam, a woman who had to go to court for her maintenance after being abandoned by her husband, Mohammed Ahmed Khan. Emraan Hashmi is the actor who has been cast for the role of her husband.

Through the example of Shah Bano, the film draws attention to the most important judicial decision in Indian history. The judicial decision of the Supreme Court brought a paradigm shift in the judicial scenario of the country and led to quite an interesting discussion about women’s rights and the rights of minorities and Muslims in particular.
