Haq is all set to mark its exclusive OTT launch after its successful theatrical run. The movie is based on the courageous struggle of a woman to gain justice after being left by her spouse, owing to the actual case of Shah Bano Begum. Based on an interesting social and legal context, the story not only focuses on the family’s fight but also encompasses issues of women’s justice, minorities, and an interpretational shift in ‘Personal Laws’. The most anticipated courtroom drama will be streamed exclusively on Netflix. The one who missed the movie in theatres can enjoy it from the comfort of their sofas starting January 2, 2026.

Haq: Storyline

The movie is based on the true story of Shah Bano Begum, played by Yami Gautam, a courageous woman who approached the courts for maintenance against her husband Mohammed Ahmed Khan, played by Emraan Hashmi, when he abandoned her. Against the social and legal backdrop of the time, the film chronicles Shah Bano’s long, arduous fight for dignity, justice, and financial security.

Anchoring her personal battle as the emotional spine of the narrative, the film goes on to highlight one of the most historic judicial verdicts in Indian history. The Supreme Court’s judgment not only looked into the question of maintenance for divorced Muslim women but also triggered a nationwide contemporary debate in the modern period on constitutional values, gender justice, and personal laws.

This judgment marked a paradigm shift in India’s legal system, questioning traditional norms and paving the way for deeper talks about the rights of women. Simultaneously, however, the film sensitively explores the concerns relating to minority rights, especially regarding Muslims.
