Users will be able to verify and reserve their existing Meta platform usernames through the Accounts Center.

Early access may be limited to existing Instagram and Facebook handles ahead of a wider 2026 rollout.

WhatsApp is now working on a new feature that will allow users to reserve their preferred usernames before the full rollout of its much-anticipated username system. The update, spotted in the latest WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.25.34.3 on the Google Play Store, indicates that the messaging platform is preparing to let users claim the same usernames they already use on Facebook and Instagram.

As per the details shared by WaBetaInfo, the early reservations system is designed to help users and businesses secure their desired identifiers in advance in order to ensure fairness and prevent impersonation once the username feature officially launches.

The process will now reportedly be straightforward. The users will be able to enter the existing Facebook or Instagram handle within WhatsApp, following which the app will verify ownership through Meta’s Accounts Center. After verifying, the username will be locked and reserved exclusively for that account, meaning others will not be able to claim it even if they gain early access to the full username feature later on.

Interestingly, the option to reserve usernames might initially be limited to handles already in use on Meta’s other platforms. This means that users looking to create entirely new usernames may have to wait until WhatsApp fully rolls out the feature globally. By starting with existing usernames, WhatsApp appears to be prioritizing brand and identity consistency across Meta’s ecosystem while reducing conflicts and misuse.

It must be noted that the feature is currently under development, and as per the reports, the complete username system could be rolled out before Meta’s 2026 compliance deadline. The gradual rollout is expected to begin with select beta testers before expanding to all users.
