How to update Aadhar card address online: Here’s a step-by-step guide

Updated on 06-Nov-2025
HIGHLIGHTS

Aadhaar cardholders can now update their address online for free until July 14, 2026.

Other updates like name, date of birth, or biometrics require a visit to an Aadhaar Seva Kendra.

Address updates may take up to 90 days, and users can track status online using their URN or Aadhaar number.

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has revamped the Aadhaar address update system to make it more accessible and user-friendly. The authority now allows Aadhaar cardholders to update their address details directly on the official UIDAI website, free of cost until July 14, 2026. This update is expected to encourage millions of users to embrace online Aadhaar services, reduce reliance on physical centres, and accelerate India’s digital governance goals. However, for other demographic updates like name, date of birth, or biometrics, a physical visit to an Aadhaar Seva Kendra remains mandatory.

Here’s how you can update your Aadhaar address online.

How to update your Aadhaar address online

  1. To update your address online, visit the UIDAI website, navigate to the “Document Update” section, and log in using your Aadhaar number and OTP sent to your registered mobile.
  2. Next, choose “Address Update” and select whether you want to use supporting documents or the Head of Family (HoF) option.
  3. After filling in the necessary details and uploading valid proof, submit the form and save the acknowledgement receipt containing the 14-digit Update Request Number (URN).
  4. This URN can be used to track your application status online.

UIDAI typically takes up to 30 days to verify and update the address, depending on the document validation process.

Revised fee structure for other Aadhaar updates

While the address update service remains free online, other demographic and biometric updates, such as fingerprints, iris scans, facial data, or name/date of birth corrections, now incur a nominal fee of Rs 75 to Rs 125. These updates can only be made in person at authorised Aadhaar Seva Kendras.

According to UIDAI, the Aadhaar address update process may take up to 90 days from the date of submission. Users can check the progress by visiting the UIDAI website and selecting “Aadhaar Update Status.” Verification is done via OTP using either the URN or Aadhaar number.

If the update exceeds the 90-day window, users can contact UIDAI’s support via the toll-free number 1947 or by email at help@uidai.gov.in.
