Google just took the wraps off the Pixel 11 series, and the phones themselves look pretty familiar, this isn’t a redesign year. The real story is Gemini Intelligence, which digs deeper into the phone than on any Pixel before it. Yes, “AI phone” has become one of the most tired buzzwords in tech marketing. But the Pixel 11 series brings some meaningful upgrades to back it up, running the new Tensor G6 chip and an upgraded Gemini Nano model on-device across the Pixel 11, Pixel 11 Pro, Pixel 11 Pro XL, and Pixel 11 Pro Fold. A lot of what’s here is built to solve actual annoyances, not just tick an AI box. Here’s a look at the standout AI features on the Pixel 11 series worth paying attention to.
HiLight turns the LEDs around the camera flash into a screen-free notification system, and it’s exclusive to the Pixel 11 Pro, Pro XL, and Pro Fold. Rather than lighting up for every ping, it’s tied specifically to AI and calling. The coloured LEDs glow in different colours depending on whether Gemini is listening to you, working on a response, or ready with an answer, and they can also alert you to an incoming call from someone you’ve marked as a favourite. It’s a low-key feature, but it means you can tell what your phone is doing without turning the display on. By the way, there are a lot of phones in the market that come with this type of LED notification system.
Magic Capture helps you get the right photo at the right moment without having to worry about pressing the shutter at the perfect time. Instead of you tapping the shutter button and hoping you caught the right moment, it continuously analyses frames in the background and gives you the strongest, most natural looking moments on its own.
It can capture things like a baby’s quick smile, a pet running around, or a fast action shot such as a basketball in mid-air. In background, the feature analyses around 400 frames using the phone’s built-in AI and Google’s Gemini models to pick the best-timed and gives you the 12MP image. The best part is that Magic Capture also saves a video at the same time, so you don’t have to switch between photo and video modes.
Camera Looks gives you more control over how your photos look before you even take the shot. Instead of editing pictures later, you can choose a style that matches the mood you want right from the camera app. Like we see on a lot of other devices and also on the iPhone.
Google is still keeping the familiar Pixel camera look, but now you can pick from three extra styles:
Natural for a softer and more realistic look
Shadows for stronger contrast and darker tones
Vanilla for a warmer, golden glow effect
Google says these styles are created by changing how the camera processes photos, including rewriting the colour look-up table and the way multiple frames are combined, to give images a more natural or film-inspired appearance.
If you want something more creative, there are six additional styles available: Digi, Black Tie, Minimal, Editorial, Classic, and Velvet. And every Camera Look is fully customisable.
Rambler is Gboard’s new AI-assisted dictation mode, and it’s less about transcribing every word you say and more about capturing what you actually meant. It automatically smooths out the stumbles, restarts, and even when you use filler words, like “um” and “ah.” that come with speaking naturally, so what comes on screen reads like something you’d have typed, not a literal recording of your speech.
Creator Suite is Google’s one of the useful features for those who record and edit content straight from their phone. It includes useful tools directly in the camera viewfinder, such as social media gridlines and an on-screen teleprompter that scrolls automatically while you speak. This helps you frame your videos properly, and you can speak at your own pace to avoid missing any lines while recording.
Google has also added organisational support so that your recorded videos can now be saved directly into project folders, making it easier to manage your content. After recording, you can use Storyboard to trim and rearrange your clips quickly and easily.
In addition, Pixel Camera now allows you to set Video as the default mode when opening the app, so the camera is ready for recording as soon as you launch it.
Google first brought Live Translate to phone calls with the Pixel 10, and on the Pixel 11 series, that same real-time translation extends to the videos and podcasts you watch and listen to on your device. When you watch YouTube Shorts or other videos, the Pixel 11 can translate and dub the audio in real time.
The phone can automatically detect the spoken language, but users will also have the option to manually choose a language, similar to how Google Translate works.
This is somewhat similar to Instagram’s translation feature for Reels, but there is a key difference. On Instagram, users need to manually turn on translations, and the feature only works if the creator has enabled translations for that Reel.
On the Pixel 11, Live Translate is designed to work automatically, so the translation starts on its own while the video or podcast is playing. At the moment, the feature works with YouTube and some third-party video and podcast apps. Google has not yet confirmed which third-party apps will support it.
