Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra vs Galaxy Z Fold 7: 5 Biggest upgrades expected this year

Samsung’s next foldable phone launch is getting closer, and if recent leaks are accurate, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 may bring some of the biggest upgrades the Fold series has seen in years. What’s making things even more interesting is that Samsung may not stop at a single Fold model this time. Multiple reports suggest the company might introduce a Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra alongside a brand-new Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide. The Ultra is expected to be the direct successor to the Galaxy Z Fold 7, while the Wide model could offer a different design with a broader cover display and a more tablet-like experience when unfolded.

Of course, none of this has been officially confirmed yet, so it’s worth treating these details as rumours for now. Still, if the leaks are accurate, Samsung’s next-generation foldable could turn out to be a much bigger update than many people expected.

Here are the five biggest changes currently rumoured for the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra.

Samsung could finally increase battery size

One of the most common complaints about Samsung’s Fold devices has been battery life. While the Galaxy Z Fold 7 offers respectable endurance, its 4,400mAh battery still feels limited compared to many traditional flagship smartphones in 2026. Since foldables have to power both an outer display and the larger inner display, the battery life has always been a challenging area.

According to recent leaks, Samsung could finally tackle this by increasing battery size to 5,000mAh on the rumoured Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra. On paper, an extra 600mAh may not sound like a major jump, but in daily use, it could make a meaningful difference, at least in theory. Longer screen-on times and reduced battery anxiety could be potential benefits.

Combined with expected improvements in processor efficiency, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 could finally offer the kind of all-day battery life many Fold users have been requesting for years.

Faster charging could also come

Charging speed is another area where Samsung has often taken a conservative approach. The Galaxy Z Fold 7 supports 25W wired charging, which is usable but falls behind many competing Android flagships. Several brands now offer charging speeds that can fully recharge a device in under an hour.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra is rumoured to upgrade this to 45W wired charging.  While this will not take Samsung to the top of the charts in terms of charging speeds, it would represent a significant improvement over the current model.

Camera improvements could narrow the gap with the Galaxy S Ultra series

Samsung has steadily improved the camera systems on its foldable phones, but many photography enthusiasts still go with the Galaxy S Ultra series as the company’s true camera flagship. That gap may begin to shrink with the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra. Leaks suggest Samsung could upgrade the ultra-wide camera from 12MP to 50MP while keeping the existing 200MP primary sensor and 10MP telephoto camera.

If accurate, this could lead to noticeably sharper ultra-wide photos, improved detail retention and stronger low-light performance. Ultra-wide cameras are often one of the weaker aspects of smartphone camera systems, so a significant sensor upgrade would be welcome.

There are also rumours around improvements to Samsung’s under-display camera technology. The hidden camera beneath the folding display has always been an impressive piece of engineering, but its image quality has traditionally lagged behind that of conventional selfie cameras.

There are also reports suggesting Samsung could improve the under-display camera hidden beneath the folding screen. While details remain limited, any improvement here would be welcome, as image quality from under-display cameras is far behind regular selfie cameras.

The next Snapdragon chip could improve more than just performance

Performance isn’t exactly an area where the Galaxy Z Fold 7 struggles, but Samsung is still expected to deliver a hardware upgrade with the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra.

The upcoming foldable is rumoured to feature Qualcomm’s next-generation Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor. For everyday tasks such as social media, browsing and messaging, the difference may not be immediately obvious. The Fold 7 is already extremely fast. However, the new chipset could improve gaming performance, thermal management, battery efficiency and AI processing.

Samsung continues to invest heavily in Galaxy AI features, and newer hardware will likely allow the company to introduce more advanced on-device AI capabilities. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra is also expected to offer configurations with up to 16GB of RAM and 1TB of storage, ensuring it remains one of the most powerful Android devices available.

Samsung may be preparing an entirely new fold strategy

The most interesting rumour surrounding Samsung’s next foldable isn’t about cameras or performance. It’s about the Fold lineup itself. According to multiple reports, Samsung could launch two different Fold models this year: the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra and the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide. The Ultra would reportedly serve as the premium flagship model and direct successor to the Galaxy Z Fold 7. The Wide variant, however, could introduce a completely different experience.

One of the biggest criticisms of Samsung’s foldables has always been the narrow outer display. While some users like the slimmer design, others find typing, browsing and general day-to-day use less comfortable than on a traditional smartphone.

The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide could solve this issue by offering a wider cover screen and a broader aspect ratio when unfolded. If Samsung follows this approach, buyers would finally have a choice between two different foldable experiences rather than a single design philosophy.

And honestly, this could end up being a bigger change than any camera upgrade or processor improvement. Giving users more choice could help Samsung attract buyers who have been interested in foldables but never fully liked the current Fold design.

Final Thoughts

The Galaxy Z Fold 7 is already one of the most polished foldable smartphones available today, which means Samsung needs to do more than deliver general upgrades if it wants to generate excitement around its successor.

Based on current leaks, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 series could do exactly that.

A larger battery, faster charging, improved cameras and a next-generation Snapdragon processor all sound like worthwhile upgrades. But the possibility of Samsung introducing both Ultra and Wide Fold models is what makes this year’s rumours particularly interesting.

Of course, Samsung has not officially confirmed any of these details yet, and things could change before launch. Still, if even half of these rumours turn out to be accurate, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 could become one of the most significant Fold upgrades we’ve seen in recent years.
