I have been planning to buy a new entry-level iPhone, but I didn’t have the budget for iPhone 17, and iPhone 16e wasn’t very exciting. But now Apple has also launched the iPhone 17e to its lineup, and I am confused about which one to spend my money on between the iPhone 16 and the iPhone 17e. The newcomer is priced at Rs 64,900. Meanwhile, the iPhone 16 is available for Rs 69,900 on the Apple website, and on third-party retailers like Flipkart, the 16’s base variant is available for Rs 64,900. So, in effect, both start at the same starting price of Rs 64,900, and I decided to compare their specifications and features to find which one suits me.
If you are confused like me, this article should help you pick the right iPhone for your needs.
Both models have a flat-edge aluminium frame with a glass front and back. They are close in size and weight.
Both have glass on the front and the back. In terms of durability, iPhone 17 uses a better version of Apple’s Ceramic Shield on the front. Both offer IP68 dust and water resistance, which means they are rated to survive immersion in up to 6 metres of water for 30 minutes.
The colour options differ:
If you want more vibrant options, the iPhone 16 has the edge. But more doesn’t mean better, as your heart could want one of the iPhone 17e colours. Overall, build quality and protection are broadly similar.
Both phones feature a 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR OLED panel with HDR10 support. But the iPhone 16 has a higher peak brightness of 1,600 nits, while the iPhone 17e offers 1,200 nits peak brightness. The iPhone 16 supports Dolby Vision, which benefits compatible streaming content. The 17e lacks this.
Resolution and pixel density (460 PPI) are nearly identical, delivering sharp text and rich colours. This will be backed by stereo speakers and spatial audio support.
Neither phone offers a high refresh rate. If you expect 120Hz ProMotion, you will need to look at the Pro models.
iPhone 16 has the Dynamic Island, while iPhone 17 has the older notch.
This is where the gap widens. iPhone 17e runs on the A19 chip built on a 3nm (N3E) process, while iPhone 16 uses the older A18 chip, also fabricated on 3nm technology (N3P).
Both are powerful enough for gaming, 4K video recording and long-term iOS updates. However, the newer A19 is expected to offer better efficiency (newer process node), stronger on-device AI processing, and longer support. A19 is also faster and offers slightly better benchmark scores.
The iPhone 17e ships with iOS 26.3 out of the box, while the iPhone 16 launched with iOS 18 and is upgradable to iOS 26.3. In practical terms, both will receive years of updates, but the 17e starts one generation ahead.
Both models offer 8GB RAM, which is important for Apple Intelligence features. Apple’s on-device AI tools, including writing assistance and smarter Siri interactions, could benefit from the newer chip. The A19 is likely to handle future AI features more comfortably.
Storage options differ slightly:
So, for the same Rs 64,900 entry price, you get more storage with the 17e.
Both phones feature a 48MP main camera with optical image stabilisation and a 12MP front camera with autofocus. Apple says the primary camera is capable of producing digital 2x zoom shots with telephoto-optical-level quality.
But the iPhone 16 offers a more versatile setup:
The iPhone 17e has a single 48MP rear camera. It supports 4K video recording up to 60fps with Dolby Vision HDR, but it lacks an ultra-wide lens.
If you frequently shoot landscapes, group photos or creative ultra-wide videos, the iPhone 16 is the better choice. The 17e focuses on a simpler, main-camera-first experience.
Both devices support HDR, spatial audio recording and advanced portrait features.

Battery capacity differs:
The larger battery in the 17e should translate to slightly longer endurance, especially with the efficiency gains of the A19 chip.
Charging speeds are notably different:
If faster charging matters to you, the iPhone 16 has the advantage, provided you have the faster charger.
But if provided with the same 20W charger, both will charge 50% in around 30 minutes as per Apple testing.
Both phones include:
However, the iPhone 16 adds a few extras like an Ultra Wideband (UWB Gen 2) chip and DisplayPort output over USB-C. These features matter if you use precision tracking with AirTag and/or external displays.
At Rs 64,900, the decision depends on what you value more.
Choose the iPhone 17e if you want:
Choose the iPhone 16 if you want:
In short, the iPhone 17e feels like a performance-focused refresh built for longevity and AI readiness. If you care more about having the newest chip and potentially better battery life, the iPhone 17e makes sense.
However, the iPhone 16 remains the more feature-rich all-rounder at the same price. If you prioritise camera flexibility, broader connectivity and the newer Dynamic Island design, go for the iPhone 16.
Also consider the available bank offers, exchange discounts and other deals while making the decision.
