A washing machine and a washer-dryer can look almost identical from the outside. Both have a drum, multiple wash programmes and a spin cycle, and both can handle everything from everyday clothes to heavier fabrics. The big difference only becomes apparent when the laundry is done and you have to deal with wet clothes.
With a regular washing machine, the clothes come out washed, rinsed and spun, but still damp enough to need separate drying. A washer-dryer has an additional drying system, so you can select a wash-and-dry cycle and take out dry clothes at the end. That extra convenience comes with some compromises, particularly around drying capacity, cycle duration and energy consumption.
A washing cycle uses water, detergent and the movement of the drum to remove dirt from clothes. The machine fills the drum, mixes the detergent with water and moves the clothes through the solution. It then drains the dirty water, adds fresh water for rinsing and finishes with a high-speed spin.

The spin cycle removes a large amount of water from the fabric through centrifugal force, but the clothes are still damp when they come out. They need to be dried separately, either on a clothesline or drying rack, or in a tumble dryer.
A washer-dryer has an additional drying system built into the same machine. After the wash and spin cycles, it circulates warm air through the drum to remove the moisture left in the clothes. The moisture is then collected and drained away, depending on how the machine is designed.
Traditional washer-dryers generally use a heater and fan for this process. Newer models can use heat-pump technology, which operates at lower temperatures and reuses heat during the drying cycle. All of these components have to work within the same cabinet as the washing system, including the heating, airflow and moisture-management hardware.
A washer-dryer might be advertised with a 9 kg washing capacity and a 6 kg drying capacity, and those two numbers refer to different things. The machine can wash up to 9 kg of clothes in one cycle, but its drying system is designed to handle a maximum of 6 kg. This is because drying needs more space inside the drum, as clothes have to tumble freely and warm air needs to circulate through the load to remove moisture effectively.
Therefore, while you may be able to wash a full 9 kg load, the machine won’t be able to dry all of it in the same cycle. Some clothes may have to be taken out before starting the drying programme. With separate machines, the washing and drying capacities can be matched more closely, and you can move the entire load from the washer to the dryer without reducing it first.
A complete wash-and-dry cycle can take several hours, depending on the programme, load and fabric type. The machine first goes through the usual washing, rinsing and spinning stages, then starts the drying cycle to remove the remaining moisture from the clothes.
Drying itself takes time because the machine has to continuously circulate warm air through the clothes and remove the moisture released from them. Heat-pump models can also use longer, lower-temperature drying cycles, while other systems may use higher temperatures to speed things up.

The longer cycle isn’t an issue when you can leave the machine running while you’re away or asleep. However, it does become less convenient when you have multiple loads of laundry to finish in a day, since the same machine can’t start washing another load while it is busy drying the first one.
The biggest advantage is convenience. You don’t have to take wet clothes out of one machine and move them somewhere else. For someone living in an apartment with limited space, that can make a meaningful difference.
It can also be useful during monsoon or in homes where outdoor drying space is limited. Instead of waiting for clothes to dry naturally, you can use the drying function whenever required. There’s also less physical handling of laundry. A wash-and-dry programme can take care of the entire process while you’re doing something else.
A separate washing machine and dryer take up more space and usually cost more when purchased together, and you also have to move clothes from one machine to the other. The advantage is flexibility: you can run the washer and dryer at the same time, which is useful when you’re doing several loads, and you aren’t restricted by the washer-dryer’s lower drying capacity.
Dedicated dryers can also offer more specialised drying programmes, particularly for households that regularly need to dry large quantities of clothes.
For a home where space is limited and convenience matters more than processing multiple loads quickly, a washer-dryer is a practical choice. You get both functions without needing two separate appliances.
