Makes emails, assignments, and reports more clear and professional.

Writing has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. In school, I learned that it was not just about having ideas but also about how those ideas were communicated or written down. In college, it became even more serious as I had to write reports for projects, presentations, and even a thesis. It was not long before writing ceased to be just a school requirement and became a skill that I could bank on. Today, I write for a living, which makes it more than just a habit; it is a profession for me.

When artificial intelligence arrived, tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude showed everyone that text could be generated in seconds. However, this article is not about those tools that write everything for you. Instead, I’ll introduce you to the AI tools that can help you improve what you have already written. In this article I’ve curated a list of AI writing tools which every student and professional must be aware of in order to write in a clearer way.

1. QuillBot: One-stop AI writing assistant

QuillBot had already been around for quite some time, and many students and professionals were using it regularly. When I was first introduced to QuillBot, I was astonished to see how well it improved something I had already written. Sometimes when I write, my sentences feel correct to me, but when I read them again, they sound confusing. QuillBot helped me rewrite those sentences in a clearer and simpler way. It felt like having someone who understands my writing and suggests a better version without changing my meaning.

One thing I personally like is its paraphrasing modes. There is a standard mode, a fluency mode, and even a creative mode. I tested each of these myself. The standard mode keeps things safe and simple. The fluency mode improves readability. The creative mode sometimes gives completely new sentence styles that I would not have thought of. This feature helped me learn different ways of expressing the same idea.

The tool also has an inbuilt grammar checker that can help you correct minor grammatical errors that you would normally ignore when writing in a hurry. Furthermore, the summariser can also help you edit long sentences, and this is important when you need to write short notes.

Another strong AI feature is the grammar and plagiarism checks. The AI not only fixes mistakes, but it also points out possible problems, like text that isn’t properly credited. For academic writing, this feature has been surprisingly helpful. The AI-assisted citation generator is another plus when working on research-heavy projects.

When I used QuillBot Premium, I could feel the difference in the services offered by the two versions of the tool. With the premium, you get more paraphrasing modes and longer text limits. I tested the formal and academic modes, and they were especially useful for professional and academic writing. The premium version also processed text faster. Based on my testing, the premium features are genuinely useful if you write regularly.

Pros
  • Offers more than just paraphrasing and grammar checking.
  • Provides multiple modes to rewrite sentences.
  • The premium is affordable.
Cons
  • Can sometimes provide awkward or robotic rephrasing.

2. Grammarly: The AI grammar police

If there is one tool that has stayed with me for years, it is Grammarly. I started using it when I realised that small grammar mistakes can change how people see your work. Even a small email can leave a big impression. Grammarly helped me fix those small but important errors.

What makes Grammarly special for me is how it explains mistakes. It does not just correct you; rather, it tells you why something is wrong. Over time, you learned from the tool and became more confident in your writing. It is like that strict teacher who actually wants you to improve.

I have used Grammarly Premium for a long time, and honestly, it might be one of my best investments to date. The premium version goes beyond grammar as it improves clarity, tone, and sentence strength. Moreover, at times it also provides you with suggestions in which it has rewritten a full sentence, and the result sounds much better.

The writing tool has also received an AI touch now, and with the latest AI capabilities, the tool now gets enhanced capabilities like helping you construct sentences or paragraphs where you struggle. It can also suggest to you the places where you sounded like a bot instead of being a human companion to the readers. Aside from what was mentioned, the tool also has other AI capabilities.

Another premium feature I use a lot is the tone detector. It tells me if my message sounds confident, polite, or too harsh. This is very useful when writing professional emails, as at work, how you sound matters equally as much as what you say.

Moreover, when the Grammarly AI notices overly long sentences, it suggests clearer alternatives. When it detects repeated phrases or awkward structure, it offers smoother options. It feels like a mentor quietly nudging you toward better writing habits over time. Grammarly is one tool that can help you grow not just as a writer but also as a better communicator.

Pros
  • Provides industry-standard error spotting.
  • Features cross-platform integration support.
  • Gives real-time feedback on how your writing sounds.
Cons
  • The premium is a bit costly.
  • Can sometimes be overly prescriptive.

3. Wordtune: Your personalised AI copywriter

Wordtune may feel a bit different to you when you compare it to the other tools mentioned in this list of best AI writing tools, as it focuses more on rewriting than correcting. When I tested Wordtune, I found out that it is capable of giving multiple versions of the same sentence. This helped me see different ways to express my thoughts.

It’s an AI tool that you use when you know what you want to say, but you’re not sure how to say it in a way that’s clear or even the best way to say it. It’s specifically designed to write sentences in a variety of ways.

When I tried out the free version, I noticed that it offers many rewriting options, not just changing words. Each option has a different style, some of which sound more casual, some sound more emotional, some sound more formal, and so on.

Another interesting feature is that it can shorten or expand sentences; it’s extremely helpful when I want to make my writing more detailed or more direct, depending on the situation. For example, if you are writing a message to a professor or a client, the AI can help you choose a tone that sounds respectful but confident. If you are writing an informal message to a friend or classmate, the AI can suggest a more relaxed tone.

The company claims that the premium version’s AI does even more. It says the AI can offer longer rewrites, smoother transitions between ideas, tone adjustments, and even help summarise content. I want to be honest and clear here; I have not personally tested the premium version yet. So I cannot speak from my own experience about those AI features.

Pros
  • Offers a list of several varied ways to rewrite.
  • Includes specific shorten and expand features.
  • The UI is extremely easy to use.
Cons
  • The free version is limited to only 10 rewrites per day.
  • It does not include a plagiarism checker.
