GitHub Octoverse 2026: India is the second largest developer hub and growing faster than the US

One in every seven developers on GitHub is based out of India. Can you imagine the same? According to the 2026 Octoverse Report, there are over 225 million developers worldwide and among them, 32 million are Indian developers. It means that India stands at number two as far as developer base is concerned.

How many developers does India have on GitHub?

As per the Octoverse Report, the number of developers in India on GitHub has reached 32 million by September 2026. The only country ahead of India is the US with 38.3 million. The third position belongs to China with 12.4 million and the fourth position belongs to Brazil with 10.2 million. India is not close to being second. The margin between India and China is more than two times.

Is India growing faster than the US on GitHub?

Yes, in terms of percentage. India had increased its developer strength by 10.08 million developers in the past year. This figure was 10.30 million for the US. Almost equal number, but the starting point was smaller for India; hence, the same growth means a greater percentage. Using the numbers from the report, India’s increase has been 46% while that of the US has been 37%.

The difference lies here. In absolute numbers, the US has added a little bit more. The difference between the two nations increased from 6.1 million to 6.3 million. India’s growth rate is higher than that of the US.

Will India overtake the US on GitHub by 2030?

This prediction of GitHub says that India will have 57.5 million developers and the United States will have 54.7 million developers in 2030. However, one year after the start of that period the United States reached 38.6 percent of its target while India reached only 28.3 percent of its target. The United States has done better than planned while India needs to increase its efforts.

Making forecasts is becoming more complicated as well. For making developer growth predictions until 2031 GitHub ran 43 different models which showed a very wide spread from less than 2x to over 6x. Thus, even GitHub itself says that it cannot determine the date when India will have more developers than the United States.

What is driving India’s developer growth?

GitHub does not name a driver for India. As far as Asia-Pacific goes, the driver is the investment of governments in the development of AI infrastructure and talent. Additionally, GitHub claims that increasing number of pull requests starts when agents draft it. More than 40% of all pull requests on GitHub start when agents do their drafts, which is twice higher than in March.

In my opinion, agents make it easier to build stuff. Any developer in Pune or a group in Bengaluru can deliver something tangible sooner than ever, and the closing statement of GitHub is about the gap between an idea that emerges over the weekend and a working solution becoming smaller than ever. India has enough people to make it happen.

Can you trust the GitHub developer numbers?

Treat it as a signal rather than a census. GitHub assigns developer locations to countries based on their stated location, and the report was authored by GitHub on its own platform. The figures for 2024 and 2025 have also been recalculated this year for a new time frame that accounts for private repositories.
