PayPal users can now make cashless payments in China via Tencent’s WeChat Pay, expanding its merchant network to attract more foreign tourists, according to Tencent.
This feature will initially be available to users in the United States, with plans for broader access to follow, enhancing convenience for international visitors in a cashless economy.
WeChat, a multifaceted platform for social media and messaging, includes WeChat Pay, also known as Weixin Pay, which is widely utilized across mainland China. The introduction of PayPal integration is expected to facilitate smoother transactions for foreign tourists, who have increasingly favored cashless payment methods during their visits.
According to Tencent, this move aligns with China’s broader strategy to enhance the experience of foreign tourists. Gary Ng, a senior economist at Natixis, emphasized that making cashless payments more accessible is crucial for attracting international visitors.
Tourism has significantly contributed to China’s economy, accounting for over 4% in 2024. Recent data indicates a resurgence in foreign tourism, with numbers surpassing 35 million last year, up from nearly 32 million in 2019.
China has begun to offer visa-free access to travelers from various countries, including the U.K., Spain, and Australia, although U.S. travelers still require a visa, except for brief transits. The ongoing expansion of payment options is expected to further stimulate tourism growth as restrictions ease.
Despite the initial low volume of U.S. travelers to China, industry analysts believe the integration of PayPal will reflect a global trend of payment platform interoperability through cross-border QR codes. Tencent has previously enabled users to link foreign bank cards since 2019, and plans to waive transaction fees for first-time users linking international cards to encourage adoption.
Recent reports show that transactions by foreign travelers using WeChat Pay increased by nearly 80% year-on-year in the first four months of the year, indicating a growing reliance on digital payment solutions among tourists.
