Artificial intelligence firm Anthropic announced on Thursday that it has secured $65 billion in private funding, elevating its valuation to an impressive $965 billion. This significant funding round positions Anthropic, the creator of the Claude chatbot, among the most valuable startups globally as it approaches a potential Wall Street debut.
This latest announcement propels Anthropic ahead of its primary competitor, OpenAI, in terms of both market valuation and reported revenue. The company stated that it is now generating annualized revenue of $47 billion from clients utilizing Claude for various tasks, including coding and personal assistance.
Founded in 2021 by former leaders from OpenAI, Anthropic has emerged as a formidable player in the AI sector. Alongside OpenAI and Elon Musk’s SpaceX, all three companies are expected to pursue public trading, although they continue to report financial losses, raising concerns about a potential AI bubble.
The funding round was spearheaded by notable investment firms, including Altimeter Capital, Dragoneer Investment Group, Greenoaks Capital, and Sequoia Capital. Anthropic’s Chief Financial Officer, Krishna Rao, stated that this funding will enable the company to meet the historic demand for its services and enhance its research capabilities.
On the same day, Anthropic introduced its latest AI model, Claude Opus 4.8, which the company claims is superior in coding and professional tasks compared to earlier iterations. This development underscores the company’s commitment to advancing its technology in response to increasing market demand.
Despite Anthropic’s rapid growth and the popularity of Claude, OpenAI continues to be a significant competitor. OpenAI recently reported a valuation of $852 billion following a $122 billion fundraising round, illustrating the intense competition within the AI industry.
SpaceX’s valuation has also surged, reaching $1.25 trillion after its merger with Musk’s xAI earlier this year. Musk has announced plans for a major stock sale, which could attract significant investor interest in the coming weeks.
Anthropic has encountered legal challenges this year, notably a dispute with the Trump administration regarding the use of AI tools like Claude in military applications. The company has initiated legal action in response to restrictions imposed by the administration.
Additionally, Anthropic has been in discussions with the White House about the cybersecurity implications of its AI model, Mythos, which is not yet widely accessible. The company also played a role in discussions at the Vatican, contributing to Pope Leo XIV’s call for robust AI regulation.
Pope Leo XIV’s encyclical, titled “Magnifica Humanitas” (Magnificent Humanity), emphasized the necessity for AI developers to prioritize the common good over profit, highlighting the risks associated with concentrated power and data in the private sector.
