Apple has once again surprised users by releasing a new software update for the iPhone 5s, a device that first appeared in stores in September 2013. The update highlights Apple’s commitment to its users by ensuring that the ageing phone does not suddenly lose important functions. It arrived quietly alongside the latest software releases for newer iPhones. With this update, the iPhone 5s can continue to function until 2027. Below is everything you need to know about the latest iOS updates for the iPhone 5s and iPhone 6.
The update, called iOS 12.5.8, is designed specifically for devices that cannot move beyond iOS 12. This group includes the iPhone 5s and the iPhone 6. With this release, Apple is now supporting the iPhone 5s for nearly 13 years and the iPhone 6 for about 12 years from their launch dates. Such long-term support is rare in the smartphone world, where many devices stop receiving updates after just three or four years.

Apple’s release notes explain that the update extends an important system certificate. This certificate is required for services such as iMessage, FaceTime, and even device activation. Without the update, these services would have stopped working once the previous certificate expired. Apple says the extension will keep these key features running beyond January 2027.
Before the current iOS update, the iPhone 5s and iPhone 6 last received an update in January 2023. That release mainly focused on security fixes for the operating system. As a result, many users assumed it would be the final update for these phones. However, the new release has now put those assumptions to rest and shows that Apple is still willing to act when a technical issue could affect basic phone functionality.

It is worth noting that Apple officially promises at least five years of security updates from the launch of an iPhone. In practice, however, the company often goes much further, and the iPhone 5s and iPhone 6 are clear examples of this. Launched 13 and 12 years ago respectively, both devices are still receiving updates that protect their core functions.
Since the iPhone 5s received the latest iOS update, social media has been buzzing with reactions. X, in particular, has captured some of the most notable responses. One user tweeted, ‘Apple still pushing security updates to the iPhone 5s in 2026…that thing launched in 2013…14 years of support is actually wild. Android flags wish they could compete. Big respect!’ Meanwhile, another user added, ‘I will give it to Apple, their support for older iPhones is unmatched.’

Apple has also rolled out updates for iOS 18 and iOS 16 for newer models. Even so, the update for the iPhone 5s has attracted the most attention. While few people rely on such old phones as their main device today, Apple’s move ensures they do not become unusable or cut off from essential services.
