Samsung’s Galaxy Note 8 was codenamed “Baikal” and the Note 9 is rumoured to be codenamed as “Crown”, which supposedly depicts the manufacturer’s belief in the upcoming device.

Rumours of Samsung’s next year flagship, the Galaxy Note 9 have been coming in for some time now. A new report by The Investor, via a local South Korean news publication The Bell says that the smartphone manufacturer will soon start the development of its next Galaxy Note smartphone under the codename “crown”.

The report from Bell quotes an official from a smartphone parts supplier saying, “We will start providing components for a pilot production (of the Galaxy Note 9) in the first quarter next year.”

Samsung’s Galaxy Note 8 was developed under the moniker “Baikal” which is one of the largest freshwater lakes in the world, located in Russia. The codename also hinted at the Note 8’s large Infinity Display. The report further states that Samsung could unveil the new Note smartphone in early or mid-August, a little ahead of when the Note 8 was launched this year.

In a previous report, KGI Securities analyst, Ming-Chi Kuo said that the Note 9 will be the first smartphone from the South Korean company to feature a fingerprint sensor embedded within the display. The display-integrated fingerprint sensor was first rumoured to debut on the Galaxy Note 8 and Apple's iPhone X, but according to Kuo, both the companies could not incorporate the feature into their smartphones in time for launch.

Samsung was also reported to be investigating the 3D face recognition technology, which Apple currently uses for enabling the Face ID on their iPhone X.
