Samsung may launch Wide Fold before Apple’s foldable iPhone to steal the limelight: Report

HIGHLIGHTS

Samsung’s Wide Fold is tipped to feature a 7.6-inch internal OLED display with a 4:3 aspect ratio, similar to Apple’s foldable iPhone.

The device is expected to debut alongside Samsung’s Z series, expanding the brand’s foldable lineup to include two Fold models.

Apple is likely to unveil its foldable iPhone later in the year, setting up a direct clash with Samsung’s foldable strategy.

Samsung has gained a lot of attention for its Galaxy Z Fold 7 design and now it is reportedly preparing to bring yet another foldable smartphone in the market, possibly to steal the limelight of the upcoming Apple iPhone Fold. As per the reports, the device will be called Wide Fold. The reports suggest that both companies are working on similar design choices, particularly when it comes to display size and aspect ratio, hinting a big rivalry coming in the global markets.

The report also claims that Wide Fold is expected to debut along with the Samsung’s existing Z series, hinting that Samsung may soon expand its foldable lineup and a competitor the Apple iPhone Fold.

As per the reports, the Samsung’s Wide Fold will feature a large internal OLED display measuring around 7.6 inches, closely matching Apple’s reported 7.58-inch foldable iPhone screen. Both devices are also said to adopt a 4:3 aspect ratio when unfolded, a departure from the taller, narrow displays commonly seen on recent smartphones. This screen ratio is expected to give the devices a book-like form factor, making them easier to hold and more practical for reading, browsing and multitasking.

The choice of 4:3 ratio could also reduce cropping when viewing photos and web pages, offering a more balanced visual experience. However, it may feel unfamiliar to users accustomed to widescreen formats for video streaming and cinematic content, which dominate modern smartphones and tablets.

Samsung is said to position the Wide Fold as an addition to its foldable portfolio rather than a replacement. Reports suggest the company may launch one Flip model and two Fold models next year, with the standard Galaxy Z Fold 8 retaining a design similar to the current Fold 7, while the Wide Fold caters to users seeking a broader display.

Apple, on the other hand, is said to introduce its foldable iPhone during the traditional fall launch event, almost a direct collision with Samsung’s new foldable strategy. Additionally, the Samsung Wide Fold is said to introduce faster 25W wireless charging.
