Tipster claims iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max will feature an adjustable 48MP Fusion camera lens.

The variable aperture could improve low-light shots and depth-of-field control.

The iPhone 18 Pro lineup is expected to launch in September 2026, following Apple’s usual release cycle.

Apple iPhone 17 Pro series has been a hit in the global markets, thanks to its new design and camera. Now, the reports suggest that Apple may offer some big camera upgrades with the upcoming iPhone 18 Pro series. As per the well-known tipster on Weibo, Digital Chat Station, the next generation iPhone 18 Pro models- iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max will offer a variable aperture lens, first for any iPhone.

If the reports are believed to be true, Apple’s 48MP Fusion camera on both iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max is said to feature adjustable aperture system. This would allow the lens to physically change the opening size to let in more light in dim conditions or reduce it in brighter environments, offering users more flexibility much like what a DSLR camera.

The source further suggests that both the main and telephoto sensors could come with larger aperture than current models, promising improved low light performance and enhanced depth of field control. In practical terms, users might be able to adjust the focus manually, allowing sharper subjects or smoother background blur, depending on the scene.

Currently, Apple flagship cameras including those on the iPhone 15 Pro, 16 Pro, and upcoming 17 Pro, use a fixed ƒ/1.78 aperture, meaning the opening size remains constant. The shift to a variable system would represent a significant leap in Apple’s photography capabilities.

Previously, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo previously suggested in late 2024 that Apple was developing variable aperture technology for its 2026 lineup. Although similar rumours surrounded the iPhone 17 Pro, the feature ultimately didn’t make it to production.

Apple iPhone 18 Pro series launch timeline

The iPhone 18 Pro series is said to debut in September 2026, following Apple’s annual launch cycle. However, the reports also hint that the Apple iPhone 18 could launch in early 2027 along with affordable ‘e’ model.
