Apple may drop the two tone rear for a cleaner unified back on iPhone 18 Pro.

Leaks suggest thicker and heavier Pro models to boost battery life.

New rear glass design aims for a more cohesive look than iPhone 17 Pro.

Apple’s upcoming flagship is already drawing attention, and this time it’s not for its cameras or performance gains but for changes reportedly happening on the back of the device. Early whispers about the iPhone 18 Pro suggest that Apple may revisit the two-tone rear design first seen on the iPhone 17 Pro, though new leaks hint at a cleaner and more uniform back panel this time around. These rumours also point to broader structural adjustments across the Pro lineup, signalling a potential shift in Apple’s design direction. Alongside these tweaks, speculation suggests the company is exploring ways to extend battery life, which could become another notable upgrade. If accurate, this may mark one of the most meaningful design updates in years.

Introduced with the iPhone 17 Pro series, the two-tone layout where the aluminium frame sharply contrasts with the glass cutout was met with mixed reactions. While some users embraced the bold look, others, myself included, never warmed up to it. Even though the final hardware looked better than the early renders suggested, the design still felt disjointed.

However, this may change next year, as the leaker Instant Digital recently claimed that Apple is working on redesigning the back glass. As per the leaks, the new rear glass narrows the visual gap between the glass section and the aluminium shell. The goal appears to be a more blended finish that avoids the jarring contrast seen on the 17 Pro lineup. However, if the leaks hold true, the 18 Pro may deliver a cleaner, more cohesive aesthetic.

Instant Digital also mentioned that the iPhone 18 Pro Max and possibly the standard Pro model will gain some thickness and weight. That shift wouldn’t be surprising, as Apple pushed battery life to new highs with the iPhone 17 Pro series, and strong early sales suggest customers appreciate the trade-off.

Even the earlier expectation that only the 17 Pro Max would bulk up proved wrong; both Pro models received similar changes. Meanwhile, the ultra-thin iPhone Air struggled in the market, reinforcing that most buyers prefer endurance over minimal weight.

The big question now is how much heavier Apple can make the iPhone before it becomes uncomfortable to use. Since the 18 Pro Max is said to be getting more weight.
