Apple’s first-ever foldable iPhone might be closer than we think, and it could cost less than expected. Well-known Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has revealed that the company has found a way to cut production costs, especially for the phone’s complex hinge mechanism. This means Apple might finally bring a foldable iPhone to market at a more accessible price, without compromising on quality.
The new design tweaks and more innovative manufacturing processes are helping Apple reduce costs, thanks to the efforts of its key suppliers. The upcoming foldable iPhone, possibly called the iPhone 18 Fold is rumoured to feature a book-style design, much like Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold. And if everything goes as planned, it could launch in September 2026 alongside the iPhone 18 lineup.
One of the biggest challenges with foldable phones is the hinge, which allows the display to bend smoothly. Traditionally, this part is expensive, but Apple’s suppliers have managed to cut its cost from about $100–$120 (Rs 8,000–Rs 10,000) to just $70–$80 (Rs 7,000–Rs 8,000).
This cost reduction doesn’t come from cheaper materials but from smarter engineering and better production methods. The savings could help Apple keep the final price of the foldable iPhone closer to other flagships on the market.
To make this new hinge, Apple has teamed up with Foxconn and Taiwanese company Shin Zu Shing (SZS). The two have formed a joint venture, with Foxconn taking the lead and handling about 65% of the hinge production. Another supplier, Amphenol, will take care of the remaining share, while Luxshare-ICT might join later to further reduce costs.
According to reports, Apple’s foldable iPhone will have a 7.8-inch inner display and a 5.5-inch outer screen, combining productivity with portability. It’s expected to use a hybrid titanium and aluminium frame, making it strong yet lightweight. When folded, it could measure 9.2mm thick, and when opened, just 4.6mm.
If Kuo’s predictions are right, the iPhone 18 Fold could debut in September 2026, priced around $1,999 (Rs 1.74 lakh).
