Android 4.1 Jelly Bean being rolled out to unlocked Galaxy Nexus devices

Updated on 11-Jul-2012

Google will begin rolling out an update that will bring their latest Android 4.1 Jelly Bean OS to Galaxy Nexus smartphones. The catch is that this update will only be available for devices that are unlocked i.e., not tied to a particular carrier. If you have an unlocked Galaxy Nexus, expect to see the update hit your device in the next few days. The update will be an OTA (Over The Air) one, and users can download it directly on their device.

Jelly Bean, which was revealed at Google I/O 2012, will bring with it a bunch of new features such as Google Now, better notifications and above all a much snappier interface. Google Chrome too will become the default browser.

The announcement of the update was made on Google ( in which the post says, “The rollout of Android 4.1, Jelly Bean, begins today, starting with Galaxy Nexus HSPA devices.”

The post goes on to say, “If you’ve got a Galaxy Nexus HSPA device, you will receive a prompt alerting you to the update over the next several days. Up next for Jelly Bean: all Galaxy Nexus, Nexus S, Motorola Xoom and of course, Nexus 7, which will ship with Jelly Bean later this month.”

What remains to be seen is when the update will be available on other devices such as the HTC One X, Samsung Galaxy S III and the plethora of other devices that were launched with Android 4.0 ICS.
