Waiting for OLED MacBook Air? It could still be two years away

OLED displays seem to be the buzzword these days when we talk about laptops. After all, once you use an OLED screen, going back to any other panel feels like a downgrade. Which is why when reports of MacBook Pro getting an OLED screen surfaced, everyone was excited about it. Even though we didn’t see the MacBook Pro OLED during Apple’s recent announcements, it is expected to be launched later this year. But, it is also worth noting that a MacBook Pro with an OLED screen could be quite expensive. Hence, the possibility of OLED screens coming to MacBook Air laptops is a much bigger deal

The Air lineup targets a wider audience, and bringing OLED technology to these devices could make premium displays more accessible. But is it happening anytime soon? If new reports are to be believed, not really.

MacBook Air OLED might be years away from launch

OLED displays result in deeper blacks, punchy colours, and improved contrast. Moreover, these panels can also be more power efficient because individual pixels turn off completely when displaying black content. But high quality OLED panels are also expensive to manufacture. Which is exactly why an OLED MacBook Air is unlikely to arrive before 2028, according to a MacRumours report.

Even though OLED has already been widely used in smaller devices like smartphones and smartwatches, scaling the technology for laptop sized screens is more complicated and significantly more costly. Now since the MacBook Air sits in Apple’s mid range laptop category, the company is expected to wait until OLED production becomes more affordable before introducing it to the model.

OLED MacBook Pro this year?

As mentioned already, Apple is expected to introduce OLED MacBook Pro models. As per reports, the company is developing a MacBook Pro with an OLED display and touchscreen support. If the timeline holds, the device could arrive sometime between late 2026 and early 2027. But Apple hasn’t officially announced anything yet, so it is best to take this information with a pinch of salt.
