It’s a Windows update that’s been long overdue. Microsoft has finally fixed the infamous ‘Update and Shut Down’ bug that has confused and frustrated users for years. The glitch, present across both Windows 10 and Windows 11, caused PCs to restart instead of powering off even when users specifically chose to shut down after an update. The issue was so common that many assumed they’d accidentally clicked the wrong option. Now, with the latest October 2025 update, Microsoft says the problem has been resolved once and for all, ending one of Windows’ most persistent and annoying habits.

If you’ve ever ended your day by hitting Update and Shut Down only to wake up to a glowing login screen, you weren’t alone. Millions of users faced this problem for years, unsure if it was their mistake or a quirk in the system. Turns out, it was a Windows bug all along.
The issue first appeared in Windows 10 and carried over into Windows 11. Instead of powering off, systems would reboot after applying updates, wasting battery on laptops and confusing users. Microsoft says the issue has finally been addressed in the latest optional update (KB5067036) for Windows 11 version 24H2 and 25H2. The company plans to roll out the fix more widely with the upcoming November Patch Tuesday update.
Alongside the shutdown patch, Microsoft is also making updates easier to understand by introducing a new naming system for its Windows updates. Instead of cryptic version codes and build numbers, future updates will carry simpler, clearer titles to help users quickly identify what’s being installed.
The timing of the fix also coincides with Windows 10 officially reaching the end of support earlier this month. Microsoft is now encouraging users to move to Windows 11, which continues to receive feature and security updates, including this much-awaited one.
