Hollow Knight: Silksong is getting a new expansion in 2026 and it is completely free

Updated on 17-Dec-2025

Just days after Hollow Knight: Silksong picked up the Best Action Adventure Game award at The Game Awards 2025, Team Cherry has given fans another reason to stay excited. The studio has officially announced Sea of Sorrow, the game’s first major expansion, and it will be completely free for all players. Slated to arrive sometime in 2026, the expansion signals that Silksong’s journey is far from over. For a studio known for long development cycles and quiet reveals, the announcement feels like a confident next step rather than a victory lap, expanding the world of Pharloom instead of closing the book on it.

Hollow Knight: Silksong to get free expansion soon

Team Cherry shared a short teaser trailer for Sea of Sorrow, offering a moody first look without giving too much away. What is confirmed is that the expansion will introduce new areas to explore, fresh bosses to fight, and additional tools that expand how players move and survive in the world. The trailer description hints at a more maritime direction, teasing that players will “voyage across and beneath the salt-stricken seas,” suggesting both surface exploration and deeper, more dangerous underwater spaces.

Based on the imagery shown, the expansion appears to revisit Pharloom Bay, a coastal region that featured prominently in Silksong’s original reveal but did not make it into the final release. One particular shot strongly resembles The Lab, a location that previously appeared only in early concept art and development maps. For longtime followers of the game’s development, this feels like a rare moment where cut content is being meaningfully restored rather than quietly abandoned.

As expected, Team Cherry is keeping its cards close to its chest. There is no specific release window beyond a broad 2026 timeline. It is expected that more details about Sea of Sorrow will be revealed shortly before launch. Naturally, fans have already filled the teaser’s comment sections with jokes about the expansion taking years to arrive, a playful nod to Silksong’s famously long road to release.

Nintendo Switch 2 edition coming soon

Alongside the Silksong expansion news, Team Cherry has also confirmed that the original Hollow Knight will receive a dedicated Nintendo Switch 2 Edition in 2026. The upgraded version will feature performance and visual improvements such as higher frame rate options and enhanced resolution settings. Players who already own Hollow Knight on Nintendo Switch will receive the Switch 2 Edition as a free upgrade.

A broader performance update is also planned across all platforms, with PC players able to preview changes through a public beta on Steam and GOG. This update includes official Steam Deck support and proper ultrawide aspect ratios, bringing the original game in line with modern hardware expectations.
