Spotify rolls out Smart Reorder for seamless DJ-style playlist transitions: How it works

HIGHLIGHTS

Spotify Smart Reorder automatically rearranges tracks by BPM and musical key.

It must be rolling out in phases. Not available in India though.

Apple Music has AutoMix feature similar to this.

Spotify has announced Smart Reorder, a new DJ-style feature for premium users that automatically rearranges playlist tracks based on BPM (tempo) and musical key. The update builds on last year’s Mix tool that introduced smoother track transitions. With Smart Reorder, Spotify aims to make playlists flow more naturally, like a curated, club or DJ-style listening experience. It is rolling out globally in stages to users who already have access to the Mix feature. India hasn’t got either of these features as of now.

What Smart Reorder does

Smart Reorder analyses two core musical elements:

  • BPM, beats per minute, which measures tempo
  • Musical key, a group of notes/sounds around which a song is built

And then blends the end of a track to the beginning of another track based on the aforementioned aspects. So, the transition sounds smooth and harmonic. AutoMix in Apple Music also works similarly to this, and it helps in listening to songs with a similar vibe.

Spotify and Apple’s feature works automatically and gives you a simplified DJ-mixing-esque experience.

How to use Smart Reorder

If the feature is available in your region and on your account, here is how it works:

  1. Open one of your playlists in the Spotify app
  2. Tap the ‘Mix’ button
  3. Select ‘Edit’
  4. Tap ‘Smart Reorder’

The playlist will then be rearranged automatically, prioritising BPM and key compatibility for smoother transitions.

Spotify has also created a ‘Mixed By’ hub within the app, showcasing curated playlists from various artists. These serve as reference points for how polished transitions can sound.

Popular transitions highlighted by Spotify include:

  • ‘Wake Me Up’ into ‘After Hours’ by The Weeknd
  • ‘Low’ by Flo Rida into ‘S&M’ by Rihanna
  • ‘No Lie’ by Sean Paul into ‘Adventure of a Lifetime’ by Coldplay

Spotify has been steadily expanding beyond passive streaming into active music shaping. Features like AI DJ, Blend playlists and Mix controls suggest the company wants users to feel like co-creators, not just listeners. These features could also increase engagement. And especially for Spotify Premium subscribers, this adds tangible value beyond ad-free listening.

We hope the feature lands in India soon. Keep reading Digit.in for similar updates.
