Smartphones have become integral in our daily lives, and if they have any issue, then it disrupts our entire day. One of the most common issues that have been occurring among Android phones lately is a visible green line on their screens. In some cases, it is permanently visible all the time, while in other cases it may arise from particular situations. There can be several reasons why a green line appears on your phone screen. Perhaps it happened after an update or after you installed another app that interfered with some of the phone’s settings or perhaps after dropping your phone. In this guide, I’ll walk you through easy steps on how to fix the green line issue on your Android device.

Things to know

A green line on your device can arise because of various reasons, and how you fix the issue depends on the root cause of the issue. There are two possible sources behind the green line that you see on the display of your device, notably the software and hardware. If you know which one is behind the issue you’re facing, then you can save a lot of time. Apparantly, there’s a simple way to check it. Just follow the steps below:

Take a screenshot and have a look at it. If there is a green line seen in the screenshot, then the problem lies on the software side.

However, if there isn’t any green line in the screenshot, then the problem lies in the hardware side of your display. This means the display panel of yours might be broken or maybe an internal connection is loose. In this case, we suggest you contact an authorised service centre and have the display replaced.

Fix 1: Adjust display settings to fix green line issue

In case the problem with the green line arises as a result of wrong display settings, particularly when it comes to the settings of the colour mode or the refresh rate, it should be fixed by following the steps below:

1. First of all, go to Settings on your Android phone and tap the display settings.

Note: On some devices, it will be called Display & Brightness.

2. Select Colour Mode or Screen Mode and switch it to Natural or Standard.

3. In case there is an option of changing the refresh rate on your phone, change its setting back to default, which is commonly 60 Hz.

4. If you find advanced or additional display settings on your smartphone, disable the colour temperature and other related options.

Fix 2: Boot your device into Safe Mode

When a device is booted in safe mode, it only runs with system applications, disabling all the third-party apps. It can be a useful fix to identify if a third-party app is behind the green line issue on your device. Here is how you can boot your device in safe mode:

1. Turn off your Android device.

2. Tap and hold the power off and volume buttons to enter safe mode.

3. Your device will now show some options on the screen. Choose safe mode from it.

4. Check if the green line is still present.

5. If the line disappears in the safe mode, uninstall recent applications one by one and reboot the device again until you locate the faulty app.

6. You can get out of this mode by restarting your phone in the normal mode.

Note: The steps to enter Safe Mode can vary slightly depending on the brand and Android version.

Fix 3: Check for software updates

The green line issue on your Android smartphone can be caused by a buggy system. However, you can just check and install a pending software update to fix the bug. Companies usually send bug fix updates to directly address display glitches introduced by an earlier update. In case you’re running beta software on your device and the green line appears on your device, then we recommend you download a stable version of the software and check if it still persists, as beta software is more prone to glitches.

In case the problem arises after an update, reverting to the old version may be considered, as the code creating the glitch will no longer be on your phone. However, there is one thing that must be remembered, as reverting to the old version is not straightforward in Android. Rather, you need to flash your device with an old software version, and it needs high technical expertise.

Fix 4: Factory reset to fix green line issue

Restoring the factory default settings can be your last resort if you tried all the abovementioned fixes and the green line issue still persists on your device. A factory reset removes all the data present on your device, including your photos, contacts, apps, and personal files. Hence, we advise you to back up your pictures, documents, and chat logs before you reset your device.

A factory reset will also revert all the settings on your device back to default. Once done, you need to set up your device again much like a new device. To factory reset your device, go to Settings > System > Reset Options > Erase All Data.
