Moisture and dampness can turn your home into an uncomfortable place as the air during monsoons or wet winters get sticky. Not only that, but the high humidity also creates problems that go beyond discomfort, like it encourages mold growth, damages walls, and, the worst, makes your room smell stale. However, it’s not hard to solve the issue, as all you need to do is invest in a good dehumidifier, but buying one is not as simple as picking any machine from the shop. There are many criteria that you need to check before investing in a dehumidifier, like the size of your room, which is one of the most important aspects. In this guide I’ll walk you through the simple checkpoints you need to keep in mind when you buy a new dehumidifier for your room.
The first and foremost step is to measure your room size. To do so, you need to check the length and width of your room and then multiply them to get the total square feet or square metres of your place.
Smaller rooms need less powerful machines. Like, if your room is up to 300 square feet, then a basic dehumidifier will be the best option. If the room size is between 300 and 500 square feet, then you need a stronger model. However, if the size is over 500 square feet, then you need a heavy-duty machine, as the small or medium device will not be able to reduce the humidity of your room.

High humidity means there is a large amount of moisture in the air. In such conditions, the usual room-size recommendations may not be accurate. Even if the room is small, excessive moisture can require a more powerful dehumidifier to effectively reduce humidity.
Start the process by assessing the amount of humidity in your room by means of a humidity tester. In case the amount of humidity is high, consider going for a high-capacity dehumidifier even if the room you intend to use it in is a small one. A room that has high moisture or water damage requires more capacity dehumidifiers.
