Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra display tested: The most colour accurate foldable screen

One of the most persistent criticisms of the Galaxy Z Fold line has been the gap in display quality between the cover screen and the main foldable panel. For most of this generation, the inner display looked noticeably softer than the cover and both fell behind the calibration standards Samsung’s own S-series flagships set. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra is the first Fold where our display tests suggest that gap is closing and where the main display itself clears a bar that most flagships do not. 

We ran the Fold 8 Ultra through Calman using a SpectraCal C6 HDR2000 colorimeter, measuring both the 6.5-inch cover screen and the 8.0-inch foldable main panel separately. Here is what the data shows.

Cover Screen Tested

Brightness and gamut

At measured conditions, the cover screen recorded a maximum brightness of 2,700 nits under HDR content playback in auto-brightness mode and 2,460 nits peak in SDR (auto-brightness). With manual brightness and extra brightness mode enabled, it reaches 1,280 nits. Samsung claims up to 3,000 nits peak, which is achievable at very small window sizes under HDR content and our figures here represents real-world conditions at more typical panel areas.

In terms of gamut, the cover screen covers 97.17% of the sRGB/BT.709 colour space in the CIE 1931 xy measurement (97.6% in the CIE 1976 u’v’ space). The DCI-P3 coverage comes in at 72.33% and BT.2020 at 51.89%. It is important to note that these P3 and BT.2020 figures are measured in sRGB calibration mode. A display correctly targeting sRGB will not fill P3, so the 72% P3 figure we got here is a result of accurate sRGB calibration, not a limitation of the panel’s physical gamut.

Colour accuracy

In the ColorChecker test, which uses 24 standard reference colour patches from the X-Rite Pantone target, it returned an average delta E of 1.05 with a maximum of 2.44. In the Saturation Sweeps test, the average delta E sits at 1.24 with a max of 2.88, and the Grayscale accuracy comes in at an average delta E of 0.94, with a maximum of 1.55.

In calibration terms, a delta E of below 1 is considered below the threshold of visible colour difference and below 2 is considered very good. The cover screen’s ColorChecker average of 1.05 puts it right at the edge of that invisible-error range, with only minor outliers pushing the worst-case patch to 2.44. We found the RGB balance chart to be stable across the luminance range, with no significant colour channel imbalance at any brightness step.

Main Screen Tested

Brightness and gamut

The main screen outpaces the cover panel across every brightness condition we measured. It hits 2,800 nits peak under HDR in auto-brightness mode, 2,560 nits peak in SDR auto-brightness, and 1,350 nits with manual extra brightness enabled. Across all three conditions, the main screen is approximately 100 nits ahead of the cover screen, which reverses what some previous Fold generations showed, where the cover panel occasionally edged ahead in brightness.

Gamut coverage on the main panel is stronger than the cover: 98.51% sRGB in CIE 1931 xy (99.1% in u’v’), with P3 at 73.41% and BT.2020 at 52.67%. Again, in sRGB mode, these P3 and BT.2020 numbers are the expected result of a tightly sRGB-calibrated panel.

Colour accuracy

Coming to the main screen’s colour accuracy, the ColorChecker delta E average is 0.61, with a maximum of 2.1. Saturation Sweeps gave an average delta E of 0.82 and max 2.28. The Grayscale accuracy sits at an average delta E of 0.75 with a maximum of 1.0.

An average delta E of 0.61 on the ColorChecker is exceptional by any measure. Very few phones from any manufacturer reach this level in factory calibration without manual profiling. The tests confirms reinforces the sRGB coverage of 99.1%, grayscale average of 0.75 delta E and saturation sweep average of 0.82. The RGB balance chart shows tight tracking across all luminance steps with no significant colour shift at low or high brightness.

How the two panels compare

The two panels are measurably different in calibration quality, but the gap is narrower than on any previous Fold. The main screen is more accurate by every metric:

Interestingly, the main screen is both more colour accurate and brighter than the cover screen. This mirrors what you experience day-to-day and the results are consistent across both cover and main display, if ever so slightly in the favour of the main screen.

Better than the Fold 7?

Our Fold 7 review measured the main screen’s ColorChecker delta E at an average of 1.6, with a worst-case maximum of 4.4. The Fold 8 Ultra’s main screen at 0.61 average and 2.1 maximum is a substantial calibration improvement, roughly 62% better on average accuracy and 52% better on worst-case. The Fold 7’s sRGB coverage measured at 100% while the Fold 8 Ultra comes in at 98.51-99.1%, which is effectively equivalent.

The jump from 368 PPI on the Fold 7’s main screen to 422 PPI on the Fold 8 Ultra is already visible to the eye. Our Calman data confirms that Samsung has used the resolution upgrade as an opportunity to also raise the calibration bar, not just the pixel count.

Revamped hinge technology

While our Calman test data tells you how accurately a panel is calibrated, what it does not capture is how the physical structure around the panel affects usage. Samsung’s new Flex Titanium technology introduces a titanium-alloy film combined with an enhanced titanium plate within the display structure which is designed to strengthen display support, help the panel absorb pressure and impact and reduce crease visibility over time. It also reinforces how the hinge balances magnetic force, display tension and mechanical resistance which affects the unfolding motion. The result is an opening action that feels noticeably lighter and more settled than previous Fold generations.

In addition, the redesigned hinge also brings about a new matte coating that makes the crease visually less intrusive and scatters reflected light so it does not catch light like in the previous generation.

Verdict

A delta E average below 1 on the main screen means colours are not visibly offset from their target values in normal use. Photo editing, colour-critical work and extended media consumption on the main display, all benefit from this level of accuracy in ways that you will not notice because nothing will look wrong. That is, in calibration terms, exactly the right outcome.

The cover screen is also excellent for a secondary panel on a foldable phone and sits comfortably in the range of well-calibrated flat-panel flagships. The small gap between the two panels means the visual transition between cover and main, something that has always slightly jarred on previous Folds, is meaningfully smoother here.
