The PS3 was undoubtedly the golden era of console gaming. Some incredible titles like The Last of US, Uncharted 2, and Red Dead Redemption launched on the PS3. And well, most of you would agree that the excitement around gaming during the PS3 days just felt different. I am talking about those much-awaited midnight launches, some iconic exclusives, couch co-op sessions with friends and those massive visual upgrades over the PS2 that made the console unforgettable for an entire generation of players. But sadly, Sony never made it possible for us to revisit those classics on the PS5.
Now if you’ve been missing those PS3 games and want to experience them on the latest console, there just might be a way. As first reported by XDA Developers, some modders have managed to get PS3 disc-based games running on the PS5 using Linux and an emulator called RPCS3. Read on to know more.

According to a report by XDA Developers, modders have figured out how to install Linux on the PlayStation 5. While running Linux on a console already sounds unusual enough, some users decided to go a step further and install RPCS3, which is a popular PS3 emulator usually used on PCs.
Once installed, the emulator was able to read physical PS3 discs directly through the PS5’s disc drive. In simple terms, this means players can now use certain old PS3 game discs on the PS5, something Sony itself never officially enabled.
A modder going by the name @retropierdolnik even showcased MotorStorm: Pacific Rift running on the PS5 through this setup. The user claimed that the game “runs like a dream” on supported systems.
For many long-time PlayStation fans, this is probably the closest thing yet to true PS3 backward compatibility on the PS5.
More recently, Digital Foundry also tested PS3 emulation on a regular PS5 using the Linux and RPCS3 setup, claiming to get results far better than most people would expect.
A few older PS3 games apparently run really well on the PS5. Ridge Racer 7, for example, was seen running at 4K and 60fps. Resistance: Fall of Man also managed mostly stable performance at 4K, while Heavenly Sword was pushed all the way up to 2880p with decent frame rates.
But this is also where the PS3’s weird hardware starts becoming a problem again. The PS3 used a very unusual processor setup, and many developers back then relied heavily on something called SPUs to handle different game tasks. Since the PS5 is basically brute-forcing some of that work through emulation, certain games end up struggling badly.
That is exactly what happened with Grand Theft Auto: Episodes from Liberty City. According to Digital Foundry, the game actually performs worse on the emulated PS5 setup than it did on the original PS3 hardware because the CPU gets pushed too hard.
Now before you get too excited, there are several limitations here. The setup currently only works on PS5 consoles running older 3.XX to 4.XX firmware versions. That means users who updated their console recently or bought newer PS5 units may not be able to try this method at all.
The process is also far from simple. You will need to install Linux manually, configure RPCS3, and provide your own decryption keys. So this is not something casual gamers can just enable in a few clicks.
The answer to this question depends on the kind of gamer you are. If you are someone who loves experimenting with hardware, tweaking software, and doesn’t mind spending hours setting things up, this PS3 emulation workaround on the PlayStation 5 is super fascinating.
But if you aren’t someone who experiments and prefer a plug and play approach, this setup is still far from practical. You need an older PS5 firmware version, Linux installation, emulator setup knowledge, and patience to deal with bugs and inconsistent performance. Some games work brilliantly, while others might struggle badly because of how difficult the PS3’s original hardware was to emulate.
In other words, this is not the magical PS3 compatibility solution many fans were hoping for. But it does enable the PS5 to run PS3 games, at least to some extent.
