During this movement in the 20th century, women first began fighting for their voting rights in the country. This movie, besides being thoroughly inspiring, is packed with some powerful performances by the star cast. If that wasn’t all, the movie shows some kick-ass role models and is a raw take on the women’s struggles in the 19h century. The Outlaw King chronicles the story of Robert Bruce, otherwise known as the “Outlaw King”, who is actually held in high regard in Scottish history. This movie is set in 14th century Scotland where the Outlaw King ferociously fights to get his country’s Independence back from England. Starring Chris Pine in the titular role as Robert Bruce, the movie is filled with powerful battle scenes and mind-boggling action-packed moments. Since the movie is set in Scotland, the Outlaw King is visually appealing. Given its brilliant cinematography and background score, you would definitely regret skipping it.

This movie is set in the post-second World War era and revolves around two soldiers who return home from the war. Based on the novel by the same name, Mudbound digs into the deep roots of prejudices that existed in the United States during the World War-II era. Starring an ensemble cast of Carey Mulligan, Jason Clarke and Jason Mitchell, the movie focuses on issues like PTSD, racism, family, parenthood and equity. With brilliant direction and a gripping storyline by its side, this top historical film on Netflix is undoubtedly a must-watch for all the history buffs out there.


Based on the memoir of the same name, First They Killed My Father is a story of hope, pain and sacrifice. The movie follows the life of a 5-year-old girl who is a child during the brutal Khmer Rouge Regime in Cambodia. The child is separated from her parents at a young age and is forced to train as a soldier. Unlike any other movie on this list, this one is a heart-warming and gut-wrenching tale of a child and her survival. The movie is brilliantly directed by Angelina Jolie and has powerful performances, spectacular cinematography and multiple painful but memorable scenes.

The King is a Netflix original film and stars the talented Timothee Chalamet in the titular role as Prince Hal. The story revolves around Prince Hal, who is crowned King Henry after his father passes away. The young prince is compelled to pave his way through all the hostilities and politics. To put it simply, The King is an outstanding historical epic with good performances, beautiful cinematography, stellar costumes, and production designs. If that wasn’t enough, the King has good action-packed sequences and phenomenal battle scenes and rightfully deserves the admiration of all the history buffs out there.

Directed by the legendary Aaron Sorkin, the trial of the Chicago 7, as its name implies, is the story of Chicago 7. The Chicago 7 was basically the name given to a group of anti-Vietnam protestors held responsible for the riots at the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago. The movie follows their trial, which is by the way spectacularly directed. The movie features an ensemble cast with popular names like Sacha Baron Cohen and has been brilliantly shot.


The first Bollywood movie to be ever nominated for an Oscar was Lagaan. Set in 1893, the backdrop of this historical movie is a small village in India whose citizens revolt against the British rule over their town. To settle the dispute, Captain Russell challenges the citizens to a game of cricket. The movie touches upon critical social issues like discrimination and untouchability. If that’s not enough, the film also has a heart-warming love story seamlessly woven throughout its plot. With everything combined, Lagaan is one of the best Bollywood historical movies on this list.
