There is no proven research that states that any kind of Air filter is 100% effective against COVID-19. Air purifiers are made to trap dust and other pollutants and not protect against COVID-19.
Standard air purifiers do not have any side effects. If you are allergic or have asthma condition, it is best to check with your doctor on the right type of air purifier that will suit your use case.
Air purifier filters are delicate and hence are not meant to be washed as washing can impact the purification efficiency. You can gently vacuum clean them to remove dust. However, there are some air purifiers that come with washable filters, which can be washed. You need to check with the model and the cleaning directions to exactly know on whether the filter is washable or not.
