Seagate Backup Plus Portable 4 TB detailed review

Portable hard drives have hit their data transfer caps since quite some time. The only respite one can get when it comes to performance is when there’s a hybrid SSD included in the setup or if there’s an internal RAID. So hard drives tend to differentiate between each other by offering more in terms of features. The Seagate Backup Plus Portable differentiates itself be providing a massive amount of storage to start with. Four terabytes of data for Rs. 13,575 works out to roughly Rs.3.64 per GB which is quite economical given that most 1 TB portable drives offer about Rs.5 per GB. So opting for high density drives makes sense for getting your money’s worth. But one could argue that high-density drives aren’t that reliable. That isn’t the case with 4 TB drives since this level of technology has matured quite well. If that wasn’t enough, you can always look towards the 200 GB of cloud storage that comes with this drive and the Lyve media management application is a nice touch as well.

Performance wise the drive is average as is the case with every portable drive. We saw peak sequential read speeds of around 135 MBps and write speeds of around 128 MBps. Random data from real world tests painted a slightly different picture with write speeds dropping way below other drives and we ran the same tests multiple times to confirm the same. Build quality is average as well, however, the sleek modern design helps quite a bit. Overall, the drive is a great buy given the beefy goodies that come along.
