Our Verdict

Kingston SSDnow UV300 is literally the cheapest good performing SSDs you can buy to quickly get a commendable performance boost. However, if you were to search around, you’d still get last year’s flagships for about a few hundred bucks more. They might not offer the same cost-to-gb ratio but they do offer much higher write IOPS which makes all the difference.

PROS

  • Very affordable
  • All-rounder Phison S10 Controller
  • Light weight

CONS

  • TLC NAND

Kingston SSDnow UV300 SSD: Detailed Review

Much has been said about Phison’s new S10 controller. It has brought high-performance SSDs to the budget segment. We’ve seen in before in ZOTAC’s Premium line of SSDs and also in Kingston’s own Savage SSD. However, with the UV300, Kingston has decided to opt for the much cheaper TLC NANDs to bring the overall price down. Moreover, the SSD does feel incredibly light. It seems only one side of the PCB is actually in populated in the 240 GB SKU which would indicate that the same PCB would be put in use for the 480 GB variant. Kingston does ship the unit with a small height adapter (if you could call it that) which adds two millimeters to the overall height should you ever need a snug fit in certain laptops.

Performance wise, the Phison S10 continues to amaze as it outperforms some of the flagships that ruled the roost until a few years back. We do see that moving the TLC has resulted in raw throughput being comparable to Toggle NAND but there is a sharp drop in IOPS, especially when it comes to write operations. Which is where the entire difference lies. These are literally the cheapest good performing SSDs you can buy to quickly get a commendable performance boost. However, if you were to search around, you’d still get last year’s flagships for about a few hundred bucks more. They might not offer the same cost-to-gb ratio but they do offer much higher write IOPS which makes all the difference.
