If you thought only cool cars and fighter planes transformed into robots, think again. Xiaomi has unveiled a Mi Pad 2 that transforms into a robot. Of course, this isn’t a real working tablet, but only a toy.

On his official Facebook page, Hugo Barra said, “Xiaomi and Hasbro are collaborating for the first time crowdfunding a kickass robot model named Soundwave in China. Instead of a vehicle transforming into a robot, this time, it's Mi Pad 2 that gets the Transformers treatment. How cool is that? R&D worked really hard to ensure that the color, details and feel are exactly the same as Mi Pad 2. They were challenged at turning such a slim 7mm tablet into a 3D robot, but they managed to do so with a 30-step folding assembly.”

The Transformers Special Edition Mi Pad 2 toy is made by Xiaomi in partnership with Hasbro. This is in celebration of Xiaomi’s sixth birthday which is today, April 6. The robot will ship from May 13 for 169 Yuan (Rs. 1,740 approx.), if the funding goal is achieved.

Coming to the Mi Pad 2, the tablet on which the toy is based, it has a 7.9-inch display with 1536x2048p resolution. Under the hood, it has a 2.24GHz quad-core Intel Atom X5-Z8500 chipset coupled with 2GB RAM. It is available in two storage variants - 16GB and 64GB. The rear of the tablet has an 8MP camera, and the front has a 5MP camera. The tablet boasts of USB-C connectivity. A 6190mAh battery powers the entire package. It runs on Android, with the 64GB variant being available in Windows as well.

What remains to be seen is whether Xiaomi brings its transformer tablet to India. Even though Xiaomi sells its smartphones in India, there are a bunch of gadgets like the Mi TV, Ninebot Mini and more, that have long been desired by fans and enthusiasts in India, but Xiaomi has so far refrained from bringing its extensive portfolio to the country. Would you like to see the Mi Pad 2 Transformer in India?
