Tablet sales to surpass PC's this year
  • The tablet market is expected to grow by 27% in fiscal 2014-15, while PC sales will see a growth of just 3%.

According to data compiled by industry body MAIT and market research firm IMRB, conventional desktop PCs will lose sales to new-age tablets this year. The tablet sales growth will be driven by growing preference for wireless mobility and changing lifestyles in consumers.

The report highlights that the sales of desktop PCs fell 26% in 2013-14 and will see a 16% decrease in volumes this year. Tablets saw a rapid growth, rising by 27% to finish with sales of 4.26 million units this year.

Tablet sales were just 90,000 units about three years ago compared with desktops which were shipping nearly 6 million units. The demand for tablets has increased due to cheaper and faster data connections and low cost of tablets. Increased sale of notebooks have also contributed to the sharp decline in the demand for desktops.

IMRB's Biswapriya Bhattacharjee stated that although tablets will continue to have a healthy demand, the sales will eventually stabilise as smartphones and 'phablets' demand increases. According to research firm IDC, tablet sales will see a growth of just 12.1 percent in 2014, while in 2013 the growth was 51.8 percent. The report stated that the reason of decline is due to the large screen smartphones or phablets  which offer better features, cameras and mobility as compared with tablets.

India is among the fastest growing smartphones market registering a massive growth of 91% over the 52.43 million units sold in 2013-14. Anwar Shirpurwala, Executive Director of MAIT stated, "We expect 100% growth of smartphone during this time period with 4G networks being rolled out and increased uptake of 3G data services."
