The indigenous ultra low-cost Aakash tablet PC isn't just creating buzz in India but outside as well. Our neighbouring country, Nepal is currently hosting its biggest technology exhibition, CAN Info-Tech 2012. According to reports, thousands of visitors are arriving at the event to take a look at what is touted as the world's cheapest tablet. So far, more than 20,000 units of the UbiSlate 7 , the upgraded version of the Aakash tablet slated to launch next month, have been booked. The tablet, in Nepal is priced at NRs 6,000, which is approximately Rs.3,750 in India. The CAN Info-Tech 2012 event is scheduled to conclude today and it's most likely that the figures increase further.

“We had a purchase order of around 10,000 units. But bookings at the exhibition and online have been over double that figure,” Vivek Khetan of Gizmos Nepal, the only distributors for Nepal told Hindustan Times. He also pointed out that though the Aakash tablet is mainly targeted at students in India, the device has evoked interest of all sections in Nepal. “We have got an order for 1000 units from a restaurant chain. And besides students, professionals and businessmen, many inquiries have come from rural areas and other regions for dealerships,” added Khetan.

Launched in December last year, the Aakash tablet had seen a massive 1.4 million pre-orders in just two weeks. DataWind, the developers of the Aakash tablet, have come up with the UbiSlate 7 , which is an improved version of the original Aakash a.k.a Ubislate 7 tablet. The UbiSlate 7 sports a faster processor and improved battery. The Indian government aims to procure about 22 crore Aakash tablets in near future. The Aakash tablets will provided to the Indian students at subsidised price of Rs. 1,500.
