At Build 2017, Joe Belfiore announced new OneDrive Files On-Demand feature that will be delivered with the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update. The Seattle-based software maker says the idea behind Files On-Demand is to help consumers be more productive even when they are offline. With Files On-Demand, OneDrive users can access their files in the cloud without having to download them. Belfiore also highlighted how the new feature will not use any storage space on their device.

With OneDrive Files On-Demand, all your files including the online ones will be accessible from File Explorer and work just like every other file on users' device. The user can also assign whether to use a desktop or Windows store apps while opening an online file. "Simply select the file you want to open in the file picker, and the file will automatically download and open in your app," said Jeff Teper, corporate vice president for the Office, OneDrive and SharePoint teams.

Microsoft says OneDrive Files On-Demand has been the most requested feature for OneDrive on UserVoice. The feature will work with both personal and work OneDrive accounts as well as SharePoint Online team sites.
