Microsoft confirms 100mn Windows 8 licenses sold, Windows Blue's 2013 release
  • PC sales have definitely slowed down in this era of tablets and mobile computing, but despite that, Microsoft has announced a big achievement for its newest OS.

Today has been a big day for Microsoft as Microsoft CMO/CFO Tami Reller took to the company blog to announce that it "recently" sold its 100 millionth Windows 8 license since the OS launched in October. This comes as a rather happy announcement seeing how PC sales have been dropping of late thanks to the tablet boom.

While the sale of the 100 millionth licence of Windows 8 may initially sound really good, truth remains that the sales have significantly slowed down since the initial drop-off period in January. Microsoft doesn’t seem too worried though, saying that even though the growth may be slow, it is still there. Windows Marketplace has grown six times since its launch and the rate at which users have been downloading apps for Windows 8 through the marketplace has also seen a significant rise.

Along with the announcement, there was also a confirmation of the long rumoured Windows Blue. The blog post didn’t give any details except that Windows Blue is a codename for the update that’s planned to launch before the year is over. We aren’t exactly sure what will be packaged into this update, but we’re hearing chatter that Microsoft has seriously taken to heart the feedback they have been getting from consumers, so the possibility of getting that Start Orb should excite you.

Reller elaborated: "The Windows Blue update is also an opportunity for us to respond to the customer feedback that we've been closely listening to since the launch of Windows 8 and Windows RT."
